SFST Curriculum, August 2006 Update
Review and updating of the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing curriculum has been
completed and is being distributed for your use. Minor adjustments in the Instructor and
Participant materials have been made as follows:
Instructor Materials
Session 01: Definition of Vertical Gaze Nystagmus revised for consistency with DRE
training definition.
Session 02: Instructor note added regarding some officers not being motivated to detect
and arrest DUI.
Session 02: Note added, “Supported by agencies in all aspects of this program, from
policy to application.
Session 02: Added alcohol enema as a method of alcohol ingestion.
Session 02: Spelling/syntax error in section 3a(5).
Session 06: Section E notation to indicate video “busy businessman exiting.”
Session 07: Section C, added note to emphasize stimulus should contrast with
background.
Session 07: Definition of Vertical Gaze Nystagmus revised for consistency with DRE
training definition.
Session 07: Section E, “balance, steady, sure reactions and coordination” added to list of
physical abilities.
Session 08: Definition of Vertical Gaze Nystagmus revised for consistency with DRE
training definition.
Session 08: Instructor note concerning WAT, syntax changed from ignition to initiating.
Session 13: Section A revised to read “Procedures and Assignments.”
Participant Materials
Session 06: Modified questions #4 and #5 to include “Phase Two.”
Session 07: Definition of Vertical Gaze Nystagmus revised for consistency with DRE
training definition.
Intro to Drugged Driving
Hallucinogens action revised to read “hallucinogens are drugs that affect a person’s
perceptions, sensations, thinking, self awareness, and emotions.
