Root knot nematode of potato (Meloidogyne spp)

Polyphagous root knot nematode
occurs in warm areas.

Damage is serious in sandy soils.

Nematode attacks increase the
incidence of bacterial wilt, fungal wilt
and other pathogens.

Symptoms:

     Above ground symptoms are not specific.

     Weak top growth and small chlorotic leaves that wilt quickly in warm
     weather.

     Tubers also show galls, deformations.

     Severe attack causes early death of infected plants.

Golden nematode of potato (Globodera rostochiences)




   It causes serious damage to the potato crop.
   Its prevalence in India was reported during
              1960s from Nilgiri hills

Symptoms:
  Stunted growth and sickly appearance of the
  plants in patches.

  Loss in vigour of plants, similar to mineral
  deficiency.

  Roots show shallow bushy appearance.

  Underground symptoms include presence of
  galls on the roots and pimple like structures on
  tuber.

Infected plants should be uprooted and burnt as soon as detected in
the field.
Organic amendment of soil to reduce the nematode activity in the
soil.
Use resistant variety like Kufri Swarna.
Deep ploughing during summer months.
Crop potato with non host crop for at least two years.
Strict quarantine measures particularly in Nilgiri hills for golden
nematode disease.
