HELICOPTER SAFETY COMPLIANCE CHECKLIST

Captain,
Marine Pilot transfers for the Port of Port Hedland are normally undertaken by Helicopter. To
assist the Port in determining your vessels’ suitability for helicopter operations, the following
questionnaire is to be completed and returned to your Agent as soon as possible after receipt.
1. Has your helicopter landing party received instructions in YES NO
accordance with AMSA Guidelines (Ship-Helicopter
Transfers Australian Code of Safe Practice) or IMO/ICS Helicopter
Procedures.
2. IMPORTANT: Have your crew been instructed NOT TO YES NO
climb on to the helicopter landing hatch unless cleared to
by the Helicopter Pilot?
3. Is the Helicopter landing hatch marked? YES NO
If so what is the diameter of your circle…………..m
4. Does your ship have a minimum clear area of 20.3m diameter YES NO
across the deck for the landing of the helicopter?
5. Do you understand that any helicopter transfer during the hours YES NO
of darkness will require the vessel to turn on all upper deck lighting?
6. Is your ship fitted with deck cranes or timber stanchions? YES NO
7. Will the Helicopter APPROACH PATH & MANOEUVERING YES NO
ZONE BE CLEAR of all wires, derricks, cranes, aerials or
other obstructions or loose objects when landing clearance
is given?
Please note that the following will also be required:
● A Fire Crew to be standing by with hoses and equipment.
● A pennant or wind sock should be clearly visible by the helicopter pilot and is
to be illuminated by night.
● A rescue boat ready for immediate lowering.
● A safe means of access for the Marine Pilot from the helicopter landing hatch
to the deck.
