Data Reflection: The range of scores (94.7-100%) for the Praxis II Content demonstrate
candidate knowledge in the content area. Analysis of sub-scores reveal the weakest area
is aspects of ‘text structure, instructional processes in the teaching of reading, affective
aspects, and environmental/sociocultural factors’. Professors teaching these courses will
perform an analysis of line items in order to reveal curriculum modifications for
improvement in these areas.

Data Reflection: Disaggregated Praxis II PLT data demonstrate that 100% of candidates
successfully completed this exam. Further analysis of elements suggests lowest
percentages in the areas of ‘short-answer questions’ [communication techniques and
teacher professionalism] with post-bac candidates than with BS candidates. It is not
understood why candidates score lower on this section of the Praxis, as many formal
exams in the Reading content courses incorporate much short-answer questioning.
Perhaps it is the content of the question asked that lacks substance. Further examination
of the type of questions asked will be warranted.

Data Reflection: ‘Plans, lessons, theme, reflection’ is the section of data aligned with
Knowledge of Instructional Strategies’. Undergraduate candidates’ aggregate score of
91.65% reveals above average understanding of instructional strategies. One reason for
this high score is most likely due to the fact that candidates choose a variety of
instructional strategies from the Success For All curriculum manual. Practice with the
specific strategies provides mastery of explicit strategies in vocabulary, comprehension,
and fluency.

Graduate initial licensure candidates do not participate in the Success For All tutoring
experience. Post-bac data was included in Praxis PLT and TFFW data.

The department takes pride in candidates’ strong instructional strategies due to not only
the SFA tutoring experience, but the combined field experiences taken by candidates.
The department will continue these experiences with its school partners.

Candidates are effective in planning for instruction in the SFA tutoring project. This
project was presented by both professor and students at a state conference (OCTEO).
Continued dialogue exists between the candidates, professor, and school partner to
support this field experience. Each semester, the school facilitator distributes data
supporting positive change in student learning; as evidence for candidate ability to
successfully plan for instruction.


The final analysis indicates a final percentage of 96.90% for 32 candidates. Analysis of
data by the professor teaching such course indicates that candidates sometimes struggle
with documenting “value-added” data. This realization requires the professor to do much
modeling and class discussion about the benefits of documenting semester lesson plan
data in order to adequately report on the final value-added component. Overall, students
do demonstrate ability to recognize how to plan for instruction and to report assessment
results based on long term goals and objectives. An additional factor related to the value-
added dimension is the school partnership; a trained SFA facilitator shares final value-
added tutoring data with the candidates.

Data Reflection: Overall, candidates in both undergraduate and graduate programs were
successful on the TFFW project. Analysis of data reveals that more direct instruction and
modeling should occur for the areas of ‘alignment with OACS and Praxis III reflection
for undergraduate candidates, and ‘assessments aligned with standards’ for graduate
candidates. Analysis of data indicates that candidates have a strong ability to plan
instruction. ‘Lesson plans, assessments, and standards alignment’ are within the
acceptable and distinguished range for both undergraduate and post-bac candidates.

Data Reflection: Analysis of data indicate that candidates do not have difficulty with
collaborating with school partners and community on topics that relate to planning for
instruction; rather they have difficulties in communication, i.e. writing. Effective writing
and verbal communications are a University Core goal. The instructor that teaches this
course has reviewed this data and makes attempts each semester to model effective
written and verbal communication. However, the action research project remains a strong
assessment for candidates to learn positive ways to support student learning and to
translate that knowledge into effective planning for instruction.

The following are overall program recommendations:

             1. Continue modeling expectations for effective oral and written
                communications with Action Research Project.
2. Continue modeling and facilitating best practices in developing
   ‘value-added’ data keeping and recording.
3. Continue modeling use of Ohio Academic Content standards to align
   lessons and evaluate student student learning.
4. Investigate Praxis II line items and adjust curriculum. In light of
   future proposed changes from ODE on revised Praxis exam for
   Content Reading, keep abreast of changes in test that might need
   curriculum review.
5. Continue validating rubrics for fairness and reliability.
6. Continue school partnerships. Pilot field and Reading competencies
   with Professional Development School Model.
