Landlubber's Lament
A small boy hears the ocean roar Oh time, you thief, you cheat, you liar
"There's secrets on my distant shore" Promising men's heart's desire
"Come sail away", the ship's bell chimes Soon, but not now. Wait. Not yet
But quickly come and go the years An old man weeps upon the beach
And now the young man clearly hears For seas and secrets never reached
The sea call "Come! While there's still time" He cries, "l have but one regret."
Then soon his precious days are sold That long before my health was failing
For trinkets: houses, cars and gold I had gone to great seas a-sailing
Ship's bell chimes a lonely last note
"I'll go," he swears with all his might
"As soon as things are all just right" "You could have had a worthy sailboat."
Then turns back to the gilded cage And champagne she'd have been christened
And business thrives in middle age Oh, if I'd have only listened.

like to be added to the Flying Scot email list.
November 13 & 14 there will be a strong fleet of
Scots at the squadron as we host Race #2 of the Florida
Scot Series. These are great chances to race against
the best our state has to offer and meet new friends
when the circuit comes our way. Finally as an early re-
minder, in early March we are hosting the National Fly-
ing Scot Midwinter regatta.

October 9th race update
Saturday afternoon racing was fantastic. 5 Scots
ventured out on Sarasota bay and swapped tacks in the
cool 10 knot breeze off of Longboat. It was great fun and
we had 3 good races. After a few months of writing
about the fun sailing in the Florida mid summer heat it is
a pleasant change to write COOL. We had some familiar
faces back from the northland. The migration of our
snowbird Scot sailors began with Bob, Sara and Pat re-
appearing at the squadron to join the usual suspects. Tip of the Month
After the racing, food and libations were shared well into Starting in clear air with ability to sail at maxi-
the evening. mum speed anywhere on the starting line is better than
being buried at the favored end.
October 17th race update
We had a good turnout of 7 Scots out racing on
a light and shifty day on the bay. John, Susan and the
kids volunteered to run the races and they managed 2
races in crazy conditions. While out on the bay every-
one‟s light air prowess was put to the test. As is often the
case in light air racing everyone had moments of tactical
brilliance mixed equally with moments of why the heck
did I go this way? The conditions did prove to be ideal
for a mid bay swim from the committee boat as the RC
waited for the “racing” boats to make their way up the
course. Of special note, we had a new boat join the fleet
this week as Geoff and Poppy migrated down from Lake
Norman, to sail with us, with their Scot, G‟s Misty.
WELCOME!!!! After the race we met for food & drink and
a brief organizational meeting.
This will be a very active year for Scot racing at
SSS. Once again we will be managing our own races on
a rotating basis. Fleet races generally start at 1:30 at
mark “I”. We have scheduled races on some Saturdays
and some Sundays with the aim of 2 fleet race dates a
month. We set up most of the schedule to avoid conflicts
with the Monthly Club races and also the Florida Flying
Scot Series so that our fleet members can enjoy a wide
spectrum of race opportunities. Ron has emailed us all a
