Hyperbole
Hyperbole: exaggeration to create an effect.
Ex : I would rather die than eat brussel
sprouts.
Ex : its raining cats & dogs.
Onomotopoeia
Onomatopoiea : words whose sound suggest
their meaning.
Ex: splash, buzz, hiss, boom
Ex :my gun went boom
Simile
Simile: comparisson between 2 things using
“like” or “as”.
Ex: free as a bird.
Ex: “my love is like a red rose”
Analogy
analogy: an explanation or description of
something unfamiliar or difficult to explain by
comparison with something unfamiliar.
Ex: “life is like a box of chocolates; you never
know what your going to get.”
Ex: “death is like a roll on a dice; you never
know what number your going to get.”
Metaphor
Metaphor: a direct comparison between 2 unlike
things without using the words “like” or “as”.
Ex: “life is but an empty dream”
Ex: Cindy is a peach
Alliteration
Alliteration: the repetition of the same consonant
sounds.
Ex: Sally sold seashells by the sea shore.
Ex: Oscar olive eats olives.
Rhyme
Rhyme: when words have the same sounds.
Ex: shore/roar
Ex: fire/expire
Personification
Personification: giving human qualities to
something not human.
Ex: the tree was talking.
Ex: the house was walking away.
Paradox
Paradox: holding contradictory ideas together
in order to point to a deeper truth.

Imagery: the use of words or prhases that
evoke the sensations of
sight,hearing,touch,smell.
Ex:

struggles against, or competes with another;
opponent; adversary.
