Email Marketing
Module 3c: Setting up a Facebook Business Page – Step by Step
Introduction
Following on from our Module 2e. Marketing your website through Social Media Sites i.e. Facebook &
Twitter we continue our Facebook Advanced modules with a module on how to set up a Business Page on
Facebook.
What you need before you start
In order to set up a business page on Facebook you will need to have an email address that has not been
used to setup any sort of Facebook account to date. This email address can’t be generic – i.e. admin or info
@yourbusiness.com.au as Facebook will not take generic email accounts. You may be successful with email
accounts like cellar@, wine@ or promotions@ (yourbusiness.com.au) it’s a matter of trying the email
address you have and seeing if Facebook will let you register with it. If you are experiencing trouble with
your email address perhaps you can contact your website host and ask them to create a new email address
for your Facebook account, have them also explain how you get access to that account through your normal
email in box so you can access that account for Facebook verification and notifications about your Facebook
Page. If you have satisfied the above – you can skip straight to Creating a Business Page on Facebook – Step
by Step, by following the link. If you already have some form of Facebook login/profile – see below for
further information.
What if the only email address I have is already registered on Facebook?
If you only have access to one account and that account currently manages your Facebook personal profile
page, you can still create a Business Page for your business. The only difference in setting your Facebook
Business Page up this way is that it will always need to be ‘attached’ to a real person on Facebook. Which
means that in the event of you leaving the business, you will have to pass on the business page to another
Facebook user that is setup with their own Facebook login?
What if I have already registered my business on Facebook as a ‘profile’ and not a
Page?
If you have already set up a ‘profile’ for your business you are using Facebook against their Terms &
Conditions – only a real person can have a profile and make ‘friends’ a business page attracts ‘likes’ NOT
‘friends’. Facebook have the right and will use it to remove profiles that are businesses, resulting in them
losing all their ‘friends’. If you have a large number of friends that you don’t want to lose we recommend
setting up a completely separate & new Facebook business page (with a new login) and transitioning your
friends over to your new page and getting them to ‘like’ you. Then ‘deactivating’ your incorrect account
once you have given people enough time to transition over (say 1 month). This way you won’t run the risk of
having your account closed.
If you have created a profile in error and you only have a small number of friends we would recommend
‘deactivating’ this account. To do this:-
a) log in to Facebook
b) Click Account tab on top right
c) Click Account Settings from drop down box
d) Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click De-activate account
e) Follow the process through to confirm de-activation
You will not be able to use this same email account to set up your new Business Page as Facebook will not
accept it. You will need to use a new email address.
What if I have already registered my business on Facebook as a ‘profile’ and have
also created a Business Page with this profile?
If you have already set up a ‘profile’ for your business you are using Facebook against their Terms &
Conditions – only a real person can have a profile, however, this scenario is not as bad as it might initially
sound and should be fairly easy to rectify. The best thing to do would be to attach the business page to a
‘real’ person rather than a profile which is also your businesses name. You can do this by following these
steps:-
If you don’t have a personal Facebook profile already – follow the steps below:-
a) Log in to Facebook
b) Click on Account and then click on Account Settings
c) You should see ‘Name’ and along the line the word Change – click on Change
d) Replace the Business Name with your name
e) Click on Save Changes
f) Click on Confirm Change
g) If you want to keep your profile page, private – so only you can see it click on Account – Account
Settings
h) Click on View Settings which is at the end of the first point – Connecting on Facebook
i) Click on the link that says Everyone at the end of the Search for you on Facebook line
j) Change this to Only My Friends – this will stop anyone from being able to search for you on
Facebook – your profile will now be private.
k) People will only be able to see you if you decide to look for them and make them your friend.
If you also have a personal Facebook profile and you would like to transfer the business page
management to this profile – follow the steps below:-
a) Log in to Facebook with your own personal page email that you use to log in to Facebook as yourself
b) Search for your business page
c) Make sure you ‘like’ your business page
d) Log out of Facebook
e) Log in to Facebook with your business page/profile email account
f) Click on Account
g) Click on Use Facebook as a Page
h) Click on Switch next to your business page
i) Click on Edit Page
j) Click on Manage Admins
k) Where it says specify an email address – type in your own personal page email that you use to log in
to Facebook as yourself
l) Put in your password – this is the business page profile password (not your personal page one)
m) Click Save Changes
n) Your picture and email should now show in the Admin section
o) You can now logout of Facebook and log back in as your own personal page email
p) Check that you can now manage the page by going to Account – Use Facebook as a Page and Switch
q) Where the old Facebook login is registered as an admin – click Remove
r) Log out of Facebook as your own personal account
s) Log back in as the old profile account (the one that was just removed)
t) Check that the Facebook page is no longer connected to that profile – Account – There should be no
‘Use Facebook as a Page’ link instead click on Account Settings
u) Scroll to the bottom of that page and click – Deactivate Account
v) This will deactivate the account but not remove it from Facebook all together if you ever log in to
Facebook using this email address it will Re-Activate this profile.
Creating a Business Page on Facebook – Step by Step
Once you have everything you need you are ready to register your business for a Facebook Business Page –
follow the steps below to get started:-
1. Ensure you have logged out of Facebook if you have a personal account.
2. Open a new web browser and type in www.Facebook.com
3. Scroll down to the very bottom and click on the link at the bottom of the page under the signup
button that says “Create a Page” for a celebrity, band or business – see image below we’ve circled the
link
4. Choose the appropriate type of signup from the 6 options on the following page – i.e. local business,
brand or company etc., If you choose Local Business please be advised that Facebook has a ‘glitch’
with the City/State box and may return an error when you try and put in your City/State if this
happens try inputting your Town and State in this format eg. (Margaret River, Western Australia) with
a comma, in between and the state written in full as in the example. If you get an option with auto
fill which matches your location – click on that option and try again. If that doesn’t work - just choose
the next Category along – Company, Organisation or Institution and submit your details this way (you
can change it later)
Example of error page Correct format
5. Ensure you tick “I do not have a Facebook account” on the following page if you are not wanting to
link it to your profile. If you want to link it to your profile – i.e. it is the only email account you have
and you are using it for your current personal Facebook account – tick the appropriate box and enter
your current email address and details into the signup box. Fill in the extra details, they do require
your date of birth here to ensure that you are a real person connected to the business account and
ensure you tick the box to agree to Facebook Terms and Conditions – and take the time to read the T
& C’s for future reference. Then click Sign Up.
6. Check your email for the verification email from Facebook and click on the link in this email to verify
your account. If the link doesn’t work – cut and paste it into your web browser. If you are presented
with a page that says “To use this feature you will need to create a profile” IGNORE IT! Click logout in
the top right corner if you are logged in and close the web page down. Now open up a new page in
your web browser (i.e. Firefox or Internet Explorer) – type www.Facebook.com into the new web
page and then login with the email and password you just registered with. Facebook is all about
‘people’ connecting and they are really keen to attach a ‘person’ to your business so you may get this
message from time to time when you try to perform various functions in Facebook – at all times
IGNORE IT otherwise you will be creating a personal profile for your business and you want to avoid
doing this at all costs, as businesses are not permitted to have personal profiles. There are some
ways to avoid receiving this message and this is covered in more detail in Adding Page Admins further
in this module.
Example of Verification email from Facebook:-
7. Once you have verified your account you can now login and view your new Business Page. If you are
accessing your business page from your personal login, login with your already existing Facebook
login and then click on Account (top right hand corner) Use Facebook as a Page and then click Switch
to open your Facebook Business Page.
Business Page Basics – exploring your page features
1. Profile Photo/Logo – you can add a photo to replace the question mark image – it’s best to choose a
square image – to add your photo click on the Upload an Image wording in the centre of your page
and then browse your computer for your preferred picture.
2. Business Info – If you had trouble using the local business signup and opted to use the “Company,
Organisation or Institution, you can now change back to a local business via the drop down boxes on
top of the page. If you don’t see the drop down box – click on Edit Page button on right hand side
and then click on Basic Information in left menu. There you will see Category and you can choose
your new preference from the drop down list. You can also edit your business information including
opening hours and facilities etc., this is also done through the Basic Information tab – again
accessed from the Edit Page button.
3. Manage Permissions - if you are a winery you will need to ensure that your page is only viewable to
an 18+ audience. To do this Click on Edit Page button and then click Manage Permissions – and
select People 18 and over from the drop down list.
4. Events – If you are a business and run events from time to time, you can activate an event option for
your Facebook page so you can add events to your page and invite others to attend.
To Add the events App (application) – Click on Edit Page then click on Apps in left hand menu. Find
Events in the list and click on Edit Settings – when the pop up box appears – click (add) next to the
word Available and then click Okay. Click View Page button at the top you should now see Events in
the left hand list under your logo.
To add an event simply click the Events tab on your page and then click create an event.
5. Photos – To add and share photos follow the following steps:-
a) Click on the Photos tab on your business page (left hand side) under your logo
b) Click on the Upload Photos button on the right hand side
c) Click on Select Photos from the pop up box if nothing happens try clicking on the Try Simple
Uploader link in the text of that box
d) You may be prompted to create an album – fill in album name and location if relevant then click
Create Album
e) Browse your computer for the desired photos then click upload photos or Open depending on
the screen you are on
f) Once uploaded you then have the option to Share your photos with your Facebook followers or
Skip – If you click skip at this stage you can add comments and descriptions and choose to share
them later. If you select share, your photos will be posted on your wall and the walls of all your
Facebook followers (i.e. the people that ‘like’ you) so they will see your photos. If you don’t
have any followers – no one will see your photos unless they visit your page, likewise if you
update your page and your ‘status’ if no-one ‘like’s’ you then no one will receive your updates
and messages.
g) Once you have uploaded your photos – the easy way to return to your business page is to click
your Facebook page name in the top right corner under your album name i.e. where it says by...
– see our example image below, we have positioned the cursor over the link back to the page
6. Sharing links and information – Once you have content on your Facebook page – i.e. photos etc.,
you might like to share them with your Facebook followers, sharing is how people that follow or
‘like’ you on Facebook receive your marketing messages, information and updates. If no-one ‘likes’
you – no-one will receive your Facebook updates. If you have followers and you share information
with them and they in turn ‘like’ your information, their friends receive a message on their wall to
say that they ‘like’ you, this is what is referred to as ‘viral’ marketing and one of the major benefits
of Facebook marketing for businesses, i.e. linking into a larger network through friends of friends of
the people that are following you. Follow the steps below to share information to your Facebook
followers:-
a) To share the photos in your recently created album click on Photos in the left hand menu when
viewing your page
b) Click on the Album that contains the photos you would like to share or alternatively click on just
the photo you would like to share.
c) Under the photo/album you will see the word Share
d) Type your message in the pop up box that appears, click on the arrow next to the lock and
ensure that your message is going to everyone and then click Share. This will now appear on
your Facebook wall and on all the walls of the people that ‘like’ you.
e) Another way to share photos is to use the link on your page. Go to your page
f) On the Share line click – Photo click on uplod a photo
g) Upload the photo from your computer and then choose your photo and add your comments and
then click share
h) To help spread the message, encourage anyone you know on Facebook to ‘share’ or ‘like’ the
information you just posted. If you have a Facebook personal page you can now share this
information with your network of friends thus spreading the reach of the message further. To
do this log in to your personal Facebook account, find the message from your business on your
wall and click either ‘like’ or ‘share’.
Like sends a message to all your friends walls to say ‘You like xxxxxxxx’ whatever the title of the
message is. ‘Share’ lets you add your own personal message to the post and shares the original
message. Experiment with both options.
*Please note – At the moment Facebook doesn’t seem to allow a page admin also ‘liking’ the
post on their wall, it has in the past but at the moment it will let you ‘like’ it but will show as the
business liking it NOT you the individual – but you can ‘share’ it as an individual this seems to
work ok and Facebook may change back and let ‘you’ the individual like it also, so it’s worth
trying and checking regularly.
This is how a ‘share’ will look on your friends wall when you post is as an individual
7. Reviews – if you are a business that would like to receive reviews on Facebook from happy
customers – you can also add a Reviews section to your page. In order to this you will have to
nominate an Administrator for your page, this administrator will need to have a Facebook login and
profile and be a ‘real person’ See Adding Page Admins below for further information. Once you have
nominated an Administrator – follow the steps below to add Reviews to your page :-–
a) Ensure you have logged out of your Facebook business page and log in using your Administrators
personal Facebook login.
b) Once logged in click on Account top left of page and then choose Use Facebook as a Page
c) A list will show with your Facebook Business Page name - - click Switch on this page.
d) Once on the Business Page Click on Edit Page
e) Then click on Apps
f) Scroll down to the bottom of this page and Click – Browse more Applications
g) You will then see a screen that says “To access this page, you'll need to switch from using
Facebook as your page to using Facebook as yourself” (see below) Click on the Continue as
*your name* button This enables you to continue adding items to the Business Page but
acknowledges that your a ‘person’ doing it (*in some browsers you may find that by clicking on
Continue as button has no effect and you get stuck on this page – try changing browsers – if you
are using Firefox – switch to Internet Explorer – or Safari or Google Chrome and see if you have
better luck. Facebook can be ‘buggy’ with certain internet browsers and operating systems
sometimes so if you do find it’s not working the way you think it should – just swap browsers
and try again.
h) In the top left search box – type in reviews and search. When the list is displayed you are
looking for Reviews by Facebook click on the word Reviews (by Facebook) and you will be
directed to the Reviews Facebook page wall.
i) On the left menu click Add to My Page – select your page and click close.
j) Reviews will now be added to your page
k) Log out and log back in to your business page to view the changes, you will now see the Reviews
tab down the bottom of the left hand column when you view page.
8. Adding a Username to your page – as soon as you have 25 people that ‘like’ your business page you
can create a username for your Facebook page. A username is beneficial as it gives you a much
better URL for promotional and printed collateral. For example the Margaret River Community
website’s current URL is:-
http://www.Facebook.com/pages/Margaret-River-Community-Website/143780512311978
i.e. if you wanted to get business cards printed with your Facebook web address this is what you
would have to use. However by creating a Username it would look like this:-
www.Facebook.com/MargaretRiverCommunityWebsite
It’s simple to create a username as soon as you have 25 or more ‘likes’ – follow these steps:-
a) Click on Edit Page button
b) Click on Basic Information
c) Click on Create a Username for this page
d) If you are logged in with your business page login (not your admin login) You will then see a
message saying you need to verify the account first via Mobile phone, you will need to enter
your mobile phone number and then follow the steps to verify your account from there. To
avoid this log in as your personal Facebook account that was set up to admin the business page –
see Adding Page Admins below.
e) If you are logged in as a page admin – you will see a box that shows your business page and
under that a box for you to enter the preferred page name – type in your page name and click
Check Availability - ignore the bottom box regarding your Facebook profile username
f) You will then see a box that confirms your username is available – click confirm to confirm your
username.
g) A confirmation box will confirm that the username has been changed and show you the new URL
for your Facebook page
You can now use this new URL for all your offline printed material, business cards, emails,
letterheads etc.,
9. Adding a Like box for your current website – to help promote your Facebook page on your current
website you can either put a button on your website with a ‘hyperlink’ to your Facebook page
and from there they can click on the ‘like’ button to like you. Alternatively you can add a
button to your website, that has been generated from Facebook to automatically let
visitors to your website ‘like’ you directly from your website without having to go to Facebook first
and therefore allowing them to continue browsing your website and not have to leave your site to
‘like’ you on Facebook.
Follow the steps below to generate a ‘like’ button through Facebook
a) Log in to your Facebook business page
b) Click – Edit Page
c) Click – Marketing from the left hand column
d) Click – Add a like box to your Website
e) Open a new browser tab or window and log in to your Facebook page in the new window ensure
you are on your ‘wall’ and copy the URL at the top of the browser by highlighting all the text
from the http:// and right click your mouse and click copy – see image below for URL example
f) Click on the other browser page you have open and click on “like box” on the left hand menu
And then past your copied URL into the box provided (Facebook Page URL?) – see example
below, as you choose from the options below the URL box the example button will change on
the right hand side, when you are happy with the size and look of your ‘like’ button click – Get
code
g) Copy the iframe text in the pop up box and send this script in an email to your website designer
to add to your website home page
Adding Page Admins
Adding Administrators to your Facebook page has a number of benefits –
You can add more Apps to your page – i.e. Reviews
You don’t keep getting asked to “Create a Profile” when performing certain searches and functions
on your page
You can nominate various staff members to help update the page without giving them the ‘master’
login and they can administer the page easily from their existing Facebook account. If the staff
member leaves – you simply remove them as an administrator.
You can perform more functions on Facebook if you are administrating the page as a ‘person’
through your own profile – i.e. commenting on other pages & full search functionality throughout
Facebook.
When you post items to the business page, you can then login with your personal login and ‘share’
the business page information with your network of friends. Even though the message appears on
your ‘wall’ if you ‘like’ the business page, the only way to really spread the news is to ‘share’ it and
‘like’ it with your Facebook friends, thus virally spreading the message to a wider network than just
the people that ‘like’ the business page, with the hope that those people will also ‘like’ it or ‘share’ it
and keep passing on the information.
If you are the only ‘person’ that will administer the Facebook page you can still create a personal
Facebook account that can be kept ‘private’ as an extra administer of the page to unlock the extra
functions and for ease of use – however this is totally your choice. You can always do it later if you
find the basic business page functions too limiting or the popups to create Your Profile become
really annoying. If you do decide to create your own account be sure NOT to do it via Create your
Profile boxes that come up when you are signed in to your business page account as this will
permanently attach that ‘person’ to the business page. By creating a separate personal Facebook
page for yourself – you can always remove yourself and delete that account later and you can pass
on the administration of the page to someone else easily by adding their Facebook email address to
your business page admin and removing yours. This would be in the event of your selling your
business or passing the management on to another person within the business.
How to Add extra Admins for your business page.
The first thing to note is that any administrator must have already signed up for a Facebook personal
page. If the person is new to Facebook get them to sign up to Facebook first – ensure you log out
completely of Facebook and then go to www.Facebook.com and then follow the sign up process on
the home page.
Steps to Add extra Admin:-
1. Log in to Facebook with your business page login – you can check you are in the right page as
you will have Create Profile – Settings & Logout on the top right.
2. Click on Edit Page
3. Click on Manage Admins
4. In the box provided – type in the email address of the person you want to nominate as another
page admin – this needs to be the email address they use to sign in to Facebook – be sure to
click Save Changes , you will then be asked for a password – this is the page’s password – not the
new admin’s password.
You will know if you have successfully added the admin as the person will now appear in the admin
panel
