     South Pacific: Ocean Of Islands

Sunday, 2 January 2011 New Series
The words ‘South Pacific’ conjure up images of blue
water, swaying palm trees and idyllic beaches but, as
this series reveals, that is only part of the story. The
stunning six-part series South Pacific is the ultimate
portrait of life in the world’s largest ocean. This
landmark series explores the isolation of its islands, the
extraordinary journey wildlife and humans have taken
to reach these remote specks of land and what
happened to both after their arrival.

Journey to places few people have heard of and witness the power of undersea volcanoes as
they attempt to form new islands, tiger sharks snatching newly-fledged albatross chicks and
bizarre human rituals that involve jumping from 20-metre wooden scaffolds with only forest
vines to break their fall. Living in splendid isolation has created a strange and constantly
surprising world inhabited by flesh-eating caterpillars, giant crabs capable of opening
coconuts, vampire bugs with antifreeze in their veins and many other unique animals, like
kakapos, kagus and monkey-tailed skinks. All found nowhere else on Earth.

In the first episode, curious wildlife is revealed, including giant coconut-eating crabs and flesh-
eating caterpillars. Human culture is different as well, the men of Pentecost Island celebrate
their annual harvest by leaping from 20-metre wooden scaffolds. While on the tiny island of
Anuta, possibly the most remote community of people on the planet – the locals survive
entirely on what they can grow and catch on their sixth-of-a-square-mile island.

     Movie: Strictly Ballroom
     Sunday, 2 January 2011

Strictly Ballroom is a romantic comedy about the
dreams of youth, rebellion and ultimate fulfilment. In a
bold style that pays homage to the classic Hollywood
dance films of the 1940s it tells a story of love and
conflict of two young people fighting for artistic
     freedom against a repressive regime.

When 21-year-old ballroom champion Scott Hastings
(Paul Mercurio) commits the cardinal sin of dancing his
own steps and not those of the all powerful Dance
Federation, the retribution is swift. He is dumped by his partner Liz (Gia Carides) and his hopes
of winning the Grand Pacific Grand Prix are dashed.

All seems lost when, out of the shadows emerges Fran (Tara Morice), an ugly duckling of the
dance studio run by Scott’s parents. Through sheer persistence she convinces Scott to give her
a chance and an unlikely partnership is born.

Federation president Barry Fife’s (Bill Hunter) pressure to break up this renegade partnership
pushes Scott into the Spanish world of Fran’s family, where Scott experiences the exciting true
     Latin dancing.

The night before the Pan Pacifics, Barry Fife reveals to Scott a terrible secret about his father
Doug’s (Barry Otto) past. Scott is trapped. To save his father he must turn his back on Fran and
conform. But minutes before Scott is to take to the floor, the truth comes out: Barry Fife has
lied. Scott is free to follow his heart.

Scott and Fran burst onto the dance floor. The response from the crowd is overwhelming. But
Barry Fife intervenes and stops the music. Defiantly six thousand pairs of hands start to clap.
Scott and Fran start to dance to their rhythm. Soon the floor is a sea of celebration.

     Grumpy Guide To...: Class

Monday, 3 January 2011 New Series
The mission at Grumpy HQ is to lift the lid on some of the nonsense we have to put up with in
life. In this series our Grumpies are hot under the collar about class, work, teenagers, money,
     romance and politics.

This week it is the subject of class - apart from anything else it’s all got so complicated…. the
toffs have run out of money, the middle class run the country, footballers are royalty, and
everyone claims to be working class because it’s the only class with street cred. You don’t
know where you are anymore with class. Except we all know that napkins are very good and
serviettes are bad, loos are acceptable and toilets are unacceptable, lounges are ghastly, but
living rooms are spiffing, and saying pardon is an absolute no no. One way or another, the
class system is alive and well.

     To The Manor Bowen: Showtime
     Tuesday, 4 January 2011

It’s now six months since the Bowens left London for a
life away from the pressures of the city. But so far
manor house living has been anything but easy,
especially when the house has resembled more of a
demolition site than a stately home.

The family are beginning to see light at the end of their
building tunnel and as autumn approaches, they get a
chance to enjoy some of the pleasures of country life.
They scrump for apples and make cider with their
neighbours, even test out their country-life skills with Jackie getting a chance to sit on a horse
     and fire a gun.

Back at the house, Laurence skilfully turns his hand to painting a very special mural on one of
the guest bedroom walls; an opulent country scene that’s like “a football league of all the best
     bits of our landscape”.

To celebrate progress, the Bowens invite their first houseguests, including their photographer
friend Nicky Johnston, to give their new home the test run.

Finally, after one last big push from the builders, the house is finished, beautifully transformed
from a cold unloved house to a sumptuous family home. But is it Laurence’s Magnum Opus
and now that it’s finished, will Jackie be in danger of getting itchy feet all over again?

     The Trophy Room
     Wednesday, 5 January 2011

Sleek Geek Adam Spencer, and super sport Amanda
Shalala, are the captains of the two celebrity teams on
the new sports quiz show – The Trophy Room.

Hosted by comedian, Peter Helliar, The Trophy Room,
is a fun-filled, fast-paced quiz show that combines
classic and current sports trivia with parlour games and
     physical challenges.

Adam Spencer is thrilled to be involved in a panel show
where he can interact with some of his sporting heroes.

“I haven’t been this excited since that John Aloisi penalty against Uruguay which sent the
Socceroos to the 2006 World Cup,” he says. “I haven’t been this energised since I watched
Garry Kasparov clinch his 1990 World Chess Championship over Anatoly Karpov.”

The ‘ubernerd’ is enjoying working with The Trophy Room host, Peter Helliar. “Pete’s the
perfect host for a sports quiz show – he could well be the love child of Larry Emdur and Shane
     Warne…or Stephen Hawking and Flo-Jo!”

Adam never underestimates his opposing captain – ABC sports presenter Amanda Shalala.
“She’s a ferocious adversary – don’t let the melodic, gently lilting surname hypnotise you into
falling for her charms – she’s an encyclopaedia of sporting knowledge – with attitude to
     match!”

Amanda Shalala lives by the motto ‘Sport is life, the rest mere detail.’ She’s “incredibly
excited” her “unnatural obsession” with sporting trivia is actually being put to good use.

“I can’t believe I’ve found a legitimate outlet to share the many random and useless sports
factoids that fill my head,” she says. “Now my friends no longer have to politely pretend they
care when I tell them about the Wallabies' historic 1984 grand slam winning team, or recount
the entire history of the St George rugby league club – I can share it with Australia instead!”

This six-part documentary series (produced by Simon
Cowell) looks at the work of ‘bionic vet’ Noel
Fitzpatrick at his multi-million dollar state-of-the-art
     centre in Surrey, England.

Noel is pioneering revolutionary new surgical
techniques to save and improve the lives of thousands
of pets from all over Britain. He is a medical engineer,
rebuilding animals using a whole range of metal
structures, nuts, bolts, implants and groundbreaking
procedures. For many of the animals referred to him, he’s their last hope.

In the coming weeks viewers will see family pets being given new legs, total knee
replacements and undergoing a whole range of reconstructive surgery.

Many will have their lives transformed by a mind boggling array of bionic implants.

In a world first, Noel will give Oscar, a cat, two new feet and attempt to rebuild the shattered
pelvis of Lottie, another cat, who was struck by a car.

It’s an emotional roller coaster for the owners and a real challenge in terms of bravery and
     perseverance.

Whether these animals are accident victims or suffering from genetic abnormalities, Noel
Fitzpatrick and his veterinary team are driven by a shared goal – to improve and extend the
lives of their patients using some of the most cutting edge and sophisticated technology
     available.

Clem’s (James Nesbitt) wildest hope has come true and
he is reunited with his wife Catherine (Orla Brady). The
Orpheus is fixed and ready to return to the surface, but
first Zubov (Goran Kostic), the Russian captain, insists
that everyone help bury the dead Russians. Once this
task is complete they can head home. But Zubov
changes his tune after the burial and instructs his men
to shoot all the Orpheus crew.

In a desperate scramble the Orpheus team manage to
escape back onto their vessel, but Svetlana (Vera Filatova) doesn’t make it in time and Vincent
(Sacha Dhawan), highly radiated, is also left on the Volos. Clem just wants to get Catherine
home to Scarlet, but Catherine changes the whole mission when she reveals her extraordinary
discovery – the lava bugs – an organism that creates renewable energy. Catherine insists that
rather than going back to the surface, they must go deeper still – deep down to the Archeon
trench where the Russians have been digging for oil. It’s here they will find the lava bug.

Once they have found and secured a lava bug sample, the Orpheus crew now have to find a
way of getting to the surface safely. But the threat from the Volos remains as Zubov and
Raymond (Tobias Menzies) work together to try and stop the Orpheus in its tracks – they
continue to put into action their plan to fire the deep scan-radar.

The Orpheus mission is thrown into disarray when the air system stops working on board and
all the crew collapse. On the surface, there’s a dangerous feeling of brinkmanship as America
and Russia finally face each other. Will the Orpheus crew manage to stabilise the lava bug
sample and make it back to the surface? Will Svetlana and Vincent escape from the
increasingly decrepit Volos? And who will be victorious on the Arctic ice – the big oil
companies or those trying to secure a new and clean energy source?

accident and begins to untangle the secrets and the lives of the complete strangers who are
involved. As Detective Inspector John Tolin sifts through the case files, pictures of the collision
and its victims, he starts to piece together the jigsaw puzzle of the events and twists of fate
that led these people to be on the road at the same time. The chaotic aftermath of the
     collision brings more surprises.

Years of experience tell Tolin that there’s more to the collision than meets the eye. But as the
mysteries pile up, he has to deal with his own complicated relationships and the tragic events
     in his life.

Stars Douglas Henshall, Kate Ashfield, Paul McGann, Jo Woodcock, Phil Davies, Dean Lennox
Kelly, Craig Kelly, David Bamber, Zoe Telford and Lucy Griffith.

     Bed Of Roses: Cat Fight
     Saturday, 8 January 2011

When Domestic Cat Regulations come to a head in
Rainbow’s End, Louisa (Kerry Armstrong) finds her two
closest friends, Deb (Kaarin Fairfax) and Marg (Caroline
Gillmer), fall on opposite sides of the argument. At a
town meeting it becomes evident that the issue clearly
     divides the community.

Louisa and Nick (Jay Laga’aia) take the first big step
towards arranging their wedding and meet with Marg
to discuss the ceremony. When Marg recommends
pre-marriage counselling and Nick strongly resists the notion it sets Louisa questioning if she
     really knows Nick.

Sean (Matt Levett) is under enormous pressure with the troubled business his father left him
and not surprisingly his relationship with Holly (Hanna Mangan-Lawrence) is also showing
danger signs. Holly comes to the realisation that she is not the right person to be working
alongside Sean at Smithwick’s Undertakers but nor does she want to leave Sean in the lurch.
