Print on Demand (PoD) Temporary Tags
Beginning May 1, 2011, dealers who have not yet signed-up for PoD with one of the four
vendors listed below will no longer be able to purchase cardboard 30-day temporary tags.
Dealers who have signed-up for PoD and are waiting its installation will be able to purchase
a limited number of cardboard temporary 30-day tags to assist them in the transition to PoD.
All dealers are encouraged to deplete their cardboard 30-day temporary tag stock even
after the May 1, 2011 deadline. Please note that as of a future date to be determined,
dealers will no longer be allowed to issue 30-day cardboard temporary tags.
DMV is working with PoD vendors to develop and to implement a process for dealers to
issue PoD temporary tags, in those rare occasions, when the connection is lost between
DMV and the vendor. DMV anticipates, no later than spring 2011, to have this process in
place for dealers.
Benefits to dealers who sign-up for PoD include:
No temporary tag inventory to track
No increase in cost
Ability to inquire on a tag number and get owner name, address, vehicle description,
as well as issue expiration dates
Real-time update to DMV’s records
No need to order or stock temporary tags
No unauthorized use of temporary tags
Quality product tested in extreme weather conditions in Arizona, Florida and
Montana
Temporary tags come in regular and motorcycle sizes
Ability to recall transactions
Ability for dealership to display corporate logo
DMV has partnered with four vendors (see below) to offer software that allows dealers to
electronically produce and print temporary tags for customers. For PoD service information,

Here is how PoD works: Using the dealer’s computer, any authorized employee
will enter the required information into the system. The system will send information
back to the dealership to include a unique temporary tag number and expiration date. A
set of temporary tags will then print on white 8 ½” x 11” paper (paper and printer
provided by the dealer). Temporary registration cards will also print on the same
sheets, and must be cut from the temporary tags. One of the registration cards should
be given to the customer to place in the vehicle and the other should be kept in the
“deal folder”. The security feature will be the tag number itself, which can be inquired
upon by law enforcement officials.
The temporary tags shall be attached to the front and rear of the vehicle via a plastic
sleeve, which is provided at no additional cost to the dealer by DMV. Information
provided by the dealer, and the expiration date will be stored within DMV’s system and
indexed to the tag number. This information, including the vehicle’s year, make, model,
color, and VIN, as well as the dealer’s name will be displayed on the temporary tags.
The dealer may reprint replacement tags, except when the temporary tag has expired.
The vendor will bill the dealer for each set of tags generated and printed. Each set of
tags will carry the same price as dealers are paying today - $2.00 per set.
Vehicles to be titled and registered out-of-state are eligible to apply for second and third
sets of temporary tags without seeking prior approval from DMV. These temporary tags
can be faxed or e-mailed to the customer by the dealer. You will only be allowed to print
one set of PoD temporary tags for your vehicles to be titled in Virginia.
