Introduction
The Civil War was the bloodiest war in history.
The Confederate was the south.
The Union was the north.
The Confederate won most of the battle.
The reason for this war is that the south
wanted slaves and the north didn’t so they
started a war.
The Union and Confederate Armies
In 1861, neither the North or the South
was ready to fight a war.
Men on both sides eagerly joined the war to
fight or for glory ,adventure and money.
In the North Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln asked the men to fight for the
Union.
Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee was a Civil War
General.
He was the youngest son of
General Henry Lee.
He was born in Stratford.
In 1831 he got married to a girl
named Mary.
He took part in a Mexican War.
The Battle of Gettysburg
During the first two years of war the
Confederate won most of the battles.
Victories kept the Union from taking over
the Confederate capital Richmond,
Virginia.
The battle of Gettysburg was a turning
point in the war.
Military Tactics and Technology
Civil War armies suffered terrible
losses in battles.
Both sides tried to attack each
other with bigger armies.
They tried attacking from
trenches.
New weapons helped them.
Combat Conditions
Civil War Combat Conditions was a
horrible nightmare difficult to imagine.
Drums beat at a pace of 110 steps per
minute.
Smoke filled the air.
Their was blood every where.
Men lay dead on the ground.
Medical Care
Hundreds of men died in the war.
The surgeons rarely washed their
hands.
Sometimes they ran out of
anesthetics.
The tents were gross.
Food and Drink
Many died because of some
of the food they ate.
They ate nasty food
sometimes it had bugs in it.
They were given a root called
chicory to make a coffee like
drink.
They took fruits from orchards
Conditions on the Home Front
Many people were mad about the
hardships and unhappiness.
In the North many people were angry
about the draft.
Only wealthy men could escape the draft
by paying the Government $300
From Gettysburg to Appomattox
The Union won a important battle
during the Battle of Gettysburg.
The Union captured Vicksburg so
the Union had control of the river.
In 1864 Lincoln asked Grant to take
over the Union.
