The health and wellbeing of Australian children lags well behind other developed nations, according to a report released today. The report, by the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth, provides an international comparison of 42 measures of young people's wellbeing. Teenage pregnancy rates in Australia are much higher than the OECD average, while pregnancy rates for Indigenous young people are the highest of all the industrialised nations. Australian children are three times as likely to live in poverty as children in Finland, and 12 times more likely to live in a jobless household as those in Japan. Australia also fares badly in a classic measure of family relationships, ranking 21st out of 27 nations in terms of children eating a meal with their parents.
