Tell Us About Your Organization
Please describe your unit, and tell us what makes your group unique. Include
information such as: Significant Performances, Musical Specialties, Audience
Interaction and Parade formation. This community inspired, community supported
program, was founded by Mr. Slayton Thompson and his wife, Linda, in 1990 when
he organized an informal drum corps to give neighborhood children a constructive
summer activity. The (free) program grew quickly and became popular with kids
and parents. From Pre-school to High School age children have performed all over
the country. This community-based program has flags, drums, poms and horns.
Traits like responsibility and confidence are developed one step at a time. The Corps
has even had the honor of marching in the1997 United States Presidential
Inaugural Parade! This program has been recommended by the Honorable Paul
Pate, Mayor of Cedar Rapids Iowa, and Chamber Commerce President Mr. Ron
Corbett. The Honorable Senator, Charles Grassley, contributed to the Corps’ efforts
to go to D.C. IN 1997. The Honorable Senator, Tom Harkin, and The Honorable Jim
Leach support our efforts to march in the 2005 Inaugural. The children carried
American flags, as they were the Honor Guard for President Bush’s visit to the U.S
Cellular Center in June. The Corps performed for Vice–President Cheney at the
request of State Senator, Major Chuck Larson Jr. who is now serving with the
National Guard in Iraq. Our story is louder than our drums, because we are
MARCHING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. “Since we live by the Spirit (of God), let us
keep in step with the Spirit;” Galatians 5:25 is quoted by Slayton Thompson,
director of the Grant Wood All City Drum Corps. This volunteer program has
benefited our school and community. Many children would not be able to transition
from homeless status to successful living without the help of this program.
