					Tangible Bits: Towards
Seamless Interfaces between
People, Bits and Atoms

          Milena Dimitrova
        November 21th, 2006
Motivation

 Inspired by the aesthetics and rich affordance of
    historical scientific instruments

 Bridge the gaps between the cyberspace and the
    physical environment

 Lack of diversity in the input/output media with GUI

 Prototype systems for the Tangible Bits are metaDESK,
    transBOARD, ambientROOM
Previous Work

 Star – seeing and pointing vs. remembering and
    typing

 Ubiquitous Computing – pushes computer into
    the background

 Wearable Computers
Goals

 Interactive Surfaces – transformation of each surface
    within architectural space

 Coupling of Bits and Atoms – everyday graspable
objects and the digital information that pertains to them

 Ambient Media – use of solid matter, liquid and gas for
smooth transition of users’ focus of attention to the
    background
Related Work

 Inspired by Ubiquitous Computing, but promoting the
    physical objects

 Unlike Augmented Reality, it uses graspable physical
objects as input rather than purely visual augmentation

 ClearBoard gave the idea for new architectural spaces
    like walls, ceilings, windows …

 Projects like Bricks, Marble Answering Machine, Live
Wire, Benches gave the idea of physical objects as input
    and output
MetaDesk
 It inherits from the obsolete historical instruments and
    devices
                passiveLENS activeLENS (haptic interaction)

    Tangible
    Geospace

                  instrument phicons
AmbientRoom

 Light patches
 Bottles
 Clock
 Water ripples
 Phicons as handles
transBOARD
 Networked digitally-enhanced
    physical whiteboard with
    interactive surface.

 Graphically view real-time
    and recorded drawings

 Tagged physical pens and
    eraser with a scanning
    infrared laser.

 hyperCards-barcode tagged
    paper cards as containers
    of digital strokes
Seamless Metaphor

 Metaphors of light, shadow and optics are compelling
and can be applied seamlessly across the discussed
    platforms

 passiveLens, digital shadows for the phicons,
    augmented flashlight with various wavelengths
Evaluation

 The paper presented the team’s vision on tangible bits,
    but there’re no experiments

 It is a good idea that they tried to engage the skills
people developed through a lifetime of interaction with
    the physical world

 Many of the ideas were a modified copy of previous work
Extensions

 Use their ideas in everyday activities not just in the
    office space

 Allow drawing on the activeLens to change the map

 Make use of smell in the ambientRoom

 Use transBOARD for project prototyping and object
    interaction
