Do you have the idea that metabolism is just how the body burns fat? I always hear people say things

like, "I was born with a slow metabolism so it's really hard to lose weight" or a description of a skinny

dude as someone with a fast metabolism... "He can eat anything!" While some of this is true, it's not

true that you can't do anything about it.

Metabolism refers to the changes that our bodies make to digested food so the body can build and

Although genetics may play a role in having a slow or fast metabolism, there are plenty of factors that

you control that affect the rate of metabolism, or how well your body can change nutrients into cells

and energy. Use these as a guide to honestly jump start that metabolism!

For example, dieting by eating too little causes your metabolism to slow way down - there isn't

enough incoming fuel so the body has to slow down to compensate and conserve energy.

So to jump start metabolism and help it become very effective, try eating 5-6 smaller, nutritious meals

throughout the day. This actually improves your metabolism by giving your body a small amount of

nutrients consistently and not overloading it, which can lead to fat storage. It also goes a long way to

handling hunger.

Not getting enough good sleep on a regular basis messes up your metabolism. Sleep is a time when

the body does most of its repair work and creating new cells and tissue, which are part of metabolism,

so working on getting a good night's sleep most of the time will contribute to a healthy metabolism.

Another factor that bogs down your metabolism is how toxic, or "polluted" your body is. Things like air

pollution, chemical-filled cleaning and personal products, unhealthy food choices (foods with lots of

preservatives and chemical additives) can overload your body's ability to cleanse and detoxify itself

and negatively affect your metabolism.

This brings us to the easiest thing that you can do right now to jump start metabolism: Drink at least 8

cups of pure water per day!
