1.      Purpose and Assumptions
     This Installation and Configuration Guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing, configuring, and
     deploying VMware vSphere.
     This guide is written with the assumption that an administrator who will use these procedures is familiar with
     VMware vSphere. The guide is not intended for administrators who have no prior knowledge of VMware
     vSphere concepts and terminology.


2.      VMware vSphere Installation and Configuration
     2.1Install VMware ESXi host
           1.     This is the screen that will be seen when booting from the VMware ESXi Installable
                  installation image (NOTE: For VMware ESXi Embedded version, proceed to the Configure
                  VMware ESXi section).




                  Press the Enter key
           2.     The end user license agreement (EULA) appears




                  Press the F11 key to accept the EULA

         3.     Select the correct disk for installation




                Press the Enter key
         4.     The Confirm Install screen appears




                Hit F11 to proceed with the installation
         5.     The Installation Complete screen appears




                Remove the CD and press the Enter key to reboot the host

   2.2Configure VMware ESXi host
         1.     Immediately following installation, set the host’s root password




                Select Configure Password
         2.     Supply the new root password, and then press the Enter key

         3.     Next, configure the management network with a static IP address by selecting Configure
                Management Network




                Press the Enter key
         4.     Ensure the network adapter you wish to configure is displayed in the Network Adapters
                window on the right




                If it is not, press the Enter key, and then select the correct adapter

         5.     Select IP Configuration




                Press the Enter key
         6.     Select Set static IP address and network configuration, set the IP address, subnet mask and
                default gateway, and then press the Enter key
         7.     Next, configure DNS by selecting DNS Configuration




                Press the Enter key
         8.     Select Use the following DNS server addresses and hostname, provide a primary and
                alternate (if desired) DNS server address and hostname, and then press the Enter key.
         9.     Press the Esc key to exit the management network configuration wizard

         10.    Press the Y key to apply changes and restart the management network


   2.3Install VMware vSphere Client
         1.     Launch the VMware vSphere installer

         2.     Click vCenter Client on the Installer Menu

         3.     Select the correct Setup Language, and then click OK

         4.     At the Welcome screen, click Next

         5.     Read and accept the license agreement, and then click Next

         6.     Enter the User Name and Organization and then click Next

         7.     Optionally select Install the vSphere Host Update Utility 4.0 (default), unless this vSphere
                Cient is not be used to upgrade or update ESX/ESXi hosts




                Click Next
         8.     Accept the destination folder defaults, and then click Next

         9.     Click Install

         10.    When the installation completes, click Finish


   2.4Install VMware vCenter Server
        1.      Launch the VMware vSphere installer

        2.      Select vCenter Server from the Installer Menu

        3.      Select the correct Setup Language, and then click OK

        4.      At the Welcome screen, click Next

        5.      Read and accept the license agreement, and then click Next

        6.      Enter the User Name, Organization, and License key (or leave blank for 60 day evaluation) and
                then click Next
        7.      Select Use an existing database server, enter the vCenter Server Data Source Name (DSN),
                and then click Next

        8.      Specify the account to be used by the vCenter Server Service using one of the following
                options:
                          Use System Account (default)
                          Specify a local or domain account
                                o   To specify a domain account, precede the account name with the domain
                                    name, e.g., domain_name/account_name




                Click Next
        9.      Accept the destination folder defaults, and then click Next

        10.     Select Create a standalone VMware vCenter Server Instance, and then click Next

        11.     Configure ports for use by vCenter Server, and then click Next

        12.     Click Install

        13.     When the installation completes, click Finish


   2.5Configure Sysprep for Windows 2000 Server
   In order to use templates and cloning for Windows 2000 machines, Microsoft Sysprep 1.1 must be extracted
   and placed on the vCenter Server.
         1.     Download and launch the file Q257813_W2K_spl_X86_EN.exe

         2.     Click Run

         3.     Using the Browse button, browse to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
                Data\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter, and then click OK
         4.     When the extraction completes, click OK


   2.6Configure Sysprep for Windows Server 2003
   In order to use templates and cloning for Windows Server 2003 you must download the Windows Server 2003
   Service Pack 1 32-bit Deployment Tools from Microsoft’s website, http://www.microsoft.com/. Once the

   download is complete, extract the files contained in WindowsServer2003-KB892778-SP1-DeployTools-x86-
   ENU.cab to c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware
   VirtualCenter\sysprep\svr2003.

   2.7Configure Sysprep for Windows XP
   In order to use templates and cloning for Windows XP you must download the Windows XP
   Service Pack 2 32-bit Deployment Tools from Microsoft’s website, http://www.microsoft.com/.
   Once the download is complete, extract the files contained in WindowsXP-KB838080-SP2-
   DeployTools-x86-ENU.cab to c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
   Data\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\sysprep\xp.

   2.8Install VMware vCenter Update Manager
        1.        Launch the installer

        2.        Select vCenter Update Manager from the Installer Menu

        3.        Select the correct Setup Language, and then click OK

        4.        At the Welcome screen, click Next

        5.        Read and accept the license agreement, and then click Next

        6.        Enter the vCenter Server IP, HTTP port and login information to allow vCenter Update
                  Manager to connect to the vCenter Server, and then click Next
        7.        Select Use an existing database server, enter the vCenter Server Data Source Name (DSN),
                  and then click Next
        8.        Enter the vCenter Server hostname, port and login information, and then click Next

        9.        Configure Proxy Settings




                  Click Next
        10.       Accept the destination folder defaults, and then click Next

        11.       Click Install

        12.       When the installation completes, click Finish


   2.9Install VMware vCenter Update Manager Extension
        1.        Connect to the vCenter Server using the vSphere client




                  Select Plug-ins, Manage Plug-ins…
        2.        Under Available Plug-ins, locate the VMware vCenter Update Manager Extension plug-in



                  Click Download and Install…
        3.        At the welcome screen, click Next

        4.        Accept the license agreement, and then click Next

        5.        Review the installation location, and then click Next

        6.        Click Finish to complete the installation

        7.        Close the Plug-in Manager


   2.10 Configure VMware vCenter Update Manager
         1.       From the vSphere Client, navigate to Home  Solutions and Applications  Update
                  Manager
         2.       Select the Configuration tab, and then click Network Connectivity

         3.       In the Settings box, enter the required network connectivity information for the patch store




                  Click Apply

         4.       In the Settings box, select Patch Download Settings. Configure the Patch Download Sources
                  and Proxy Settings as desired




                  Click Apply
         5.       In the Settings box, select Patch Download Schedule, and then select Edit Patch
                  Downloads…
         6.       Enter the task name, description, frequency and start time




                  Click Next
         7.       Enter any email addresses that should be notified when patch downloads occur, and then
                  click Next
         8.       Review settings, and then click Finish

         9.       In the Settings box, select Virtual Machine Settings

         10.      Select Snapshot the virtual machines before remediation to enable rollback, and then
                  select Don’t delete snapshots




                  Click Apply

         11.      In the Settings box, select ESX Host Settings

         12.      Configure the ESX Host Settings as desired




                  Click Apply
         13.      In the Settings box, select vApp Settings

         14.      Select Enable smart reboot after remediation, and then click Apply


   2.11 Install VMware vCenter Converter Standalone
        1.        Launch the installer

        2.        At the Welcome screen, click Next

        3.        Read and accept the license agreement, and then click Next

        4.        Accept the destination folder defaults, and then click Next

        5.        Select Local Installation, and then click Next

        6.        Click Install

        7.        When the installation completes, click Finish

   2.12 Configure Datacenters
         1.       Using the VMware vSphere Client, log in to the VMware vCenter server with an active
                  directory account in the Administrators user group
         2.       Navigate to Home  Inventory  Hosts & Clusters

         3.       In the left pane, right-click the root folder




                  Select New Datacenter
         4.       Enter the name for the new Datacenter




                  When finished, press the Enter key
         5.       Right click the datacenter and select New Cluster

         6.       Enter the name of the cluster, and select Turn on VMware HA




                  Click Next
         7.       Configure Power Management Options as desired

         13.      Review the cluster settings, and click Finish




   2.13 Add a VMware ESX/ESXi Host to VMware vCenter
         1.     Right click the Datacenter and select Add Host…

         2.     Enter the FQDN of the host, the username “root” and the root account password, and then
                click Next
         3.     If prompted with a security warning regarding the new host’s certificate, click Yes

         4.     Review the host summary, and then click Next

         5.     Assign either an existing or new license key to the host, and then click Next

         6.     Configure Lockdown Mode as desired, and then click Next

         7.     Select Put all of the host’s virtual machines in the cluster’s root resource pool, and then click
                Next
         8.     Review the summary information, and then click Finish


   2.14 Assign a New License Key to an ESX/ESXi Host
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, select the host for which you want to configure licensing,
                and then click the Configuration tab

         2.     In the Software box on the left, select Licensed Features




                Click Edit…
         3.     Select Assign a new license key to this host, and then click Enter Key

         4.     Enter the new license key and a label if desired, and then click OK

         5.     Click OK


   2.15 Configure Storage
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, select the host to be configured and click the
                Configuration tab
         2.     In the Hardware box on the left, select Storage Adapters, and then click Rescan above the
                Storage Adapters panel
         3.     To discover new disks or LUNs, select Scan for New Storage Devices. Newly discovered LUNs will
                appear in the device list
         4.     To discover new datastores or update a datastore after its configuration has been changed,
                select Scan for New VMFS Volumes. Newly discovered datastores or VMFS volumes will
                appear in the datastore list
         5.     Click Storage in the Hardware box, and then click Add Storage

         6.     Select DISK/LUN

         7.     Select a device to use for the datastore




                Click Next
         8.     Select the appropriate option for Disk Layout




                Click Next
         9.     Enter a name for the datastore, and then click Next

         10.    Configure Maximum file size, Block Size, and Capacity for the datastore




                Click Next
         11.    Review the settings, and click Finish


   2.16 Creating a vSwitch with a VMkernel Network
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, select the host to be configured and click the
                Configuration tab
         2.     In the Hardware box on the left, select Networking




                Click Add Networking
         3.     Select VMkernel in the Connection Types box, and then click Next

         4.     Select Create a Virtual Switch, select the appropriate physical adapters, and then click Next

         5.     Provide a network label for the new VMkernel port group, and choose the appropriate
                function for the VMkernel network. In the example below, the VMkernel network will be
                used for VMotion




                Click Next
         6.     Select Use the following IP settings, and then enter the IP address, subnet mask and
                VMkernel default gateway




                Click Next
         7.     Review the settings, and click Finish


   2.17 Create a vSwitch with a Virtual Machine Network
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, select the host to be configured and click the
                Configuration tab

         2.     In the Hardware box on the left, select Networking




                Click Add Networking
         3.     Select Virtual Machine in the Connection Types box, and then click Next

         4.     Select Create a Virtual Switch, select the appropriate physical adapters, and then click Next

         5.     Provide a network label for the new virtual switch, and then click Next

         6.     Review the settings, and then click Finish


   2.18 Add Adapters to a vSwitch
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, select the host to be configured and click the
                Configuration tab
         2.     In the Hardware box on the left, select Networking




                Locate the virtual switch to which you would like to add adapters, and then click Properties
         3.     Select the Network Adapters tab and click Add

         4.     Check the box next to the vmnic(s) you wish to add, and then click Next

         5.     Accept the default configuration, and click Next

         6.     Review the configuration, and click Finish

   2.19 Add a VMkernel Network to a vSwitch
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, select the host to be configured and click the
                Configuration tab
         2.     In the Hardware box on the left, select Networking




                Locate the virtual switch to which you would like to add the VMkernel network, and then
                click Properties
         3.     On the Ports tab, click Add

         4.     Select VMkernel, and then click Next

         5.     Provide a network label for the new VMkernel port group, and choose the appropriate
                function for the VMkernel network. In the example below, the VMkernel network will be
                used for VMotion

   2.20 Add a Virtual Machine Network to a vSwitch
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, select the host to be configured and click the

                Locate the virtual switch to which you would like to add the VMkernel network, and then
                click Properties
         3.     On the Ports tab, click Add

         4.     Select Virtual Machine, and then click Next

   2.21 Configure Virtual Switch Interface Load Balancing and Security
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, select the host to be configured and click the
                Configuration tab
         2.     In the Hardware box on the left, select Networking




                Locate the virtual switch for which you would like to configure load balancing, and then click
                Properties

                Click Edit…
         4.     Select the NIC Teaming tab, and then select the appropriate Policy Exceptions. Ensure that
                all adapters are shown as Active Adapters, and move adapters up as necessary.

         5.     Select the Security tab, and then select the appropriate Policy Exceptions

         6.     Click Close


   2.22 Enable Fault Tolerance for Virtual Machines
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, select the host to be configured and click the
                Configuration tab
         2.     In the Hardware box on the left, select Networking




                Locate the virtual switch to which you would like to add the Fault Tolerance network, and
                then click Properties

         3.     Select vSwitch




                Click Add…
         4.     Select VMKernel, and then click Next

         5.     Provide a network label for the new VMkernel port group, optionally add a VLAN ID and

         9.     Click Yes to begin the process of creating a fault tolerant copy of the virtual machine




   2.23 Configure Time
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, select the host to be configured and click the
                Configuration tab
         2.     Select Time Configuration, and then click Properties

         3.     On the Time Configuration screen, click the Options…

         4.     Select NTP Settings, and then highlight 127.127.1.0




                Click Edit
         5.     Enter the IP address of your NTP server, and then click OK

         6.     Check the box marked Restart NTP service to apply changes

         7.     Check the box marked Enable NTP




                Click OK

   2.24 Configure SNMP Settings
         1.    From the vSphere Client, navigate to Home  Administration  vCenter Server Settings

         2.    Select SNMP

         3.    Enter the Receiver URL, IP Port and Community String. Optionally enter the information for up
               to 3 additional SNMP receivers




               Click OK

   2.25 Add a VMware ESX/ESXi Host to a Cluster
         1.     From the Hosts and Clusters view, drag and drop the host into the vSphere Cluster

         2.     Select the Put all of the hosts virtual machines in the cluster’s root resource pool radio
                button, and then click Next
         3.     Review the summary information, and then click Finish
