Five Paragraph Essay Structure
• There are several parts to a five paragraph
  essay.
  – There are, of course, five paragraphs
• Each paragraph has its own “job”
  – What does that mean?
     • It means that each paragraph is different and
       serves a specific purpose

1. Introductory Paragraph
  •   Contains a “motivator” or “hook”
      •   Its purpose is to catch the reader’s attention and
          should be the first or second sentence of the
          paragraph
  •   Contains a thesis sentence
      •   Its purpose is to give the reader the author’s
          argument or position on the given topic

2. Body Paragraphs
  •   These paragraphs support the writer’s thesis
  •   They give examples of the writer’s perspective
  •   A body paragraph begins with a topic sentence
      •   This is a sentence that introduces a subtopic that directly
          supports the writer’s thesis
  •   After the topic sentence, the writer then gives
      specific details to support his subtopic
  •   In five paragraph essay, how many body
      paragraphs should there be?
      •   THREE

3. Conclusion
  •   A solid conclusion restates the writer’s
      thesis in a new way
  •   It also provides a “clincher” statement
      •   This “wraps up” the writer’s point, and is the
