                  Burning

    Montag – good to burn
     Destroys old life

    Allusion – Icarus
     Ironic – Beatty is the one who falls to

       his death, not Montag
    Beatty – compared to a wax doll
     As was Montag, by Mildred

    Beatty wanted to die.
     Oppressors know their actions are
       wrong
       Too weak to stop the system

       Self-Destruction
     Mechanical Hound
       Montag’s leg (injured by hound)
        "like a chunk of burnt pine log he was

          carrying along as a penance for some
          obscure sin."
        Suffers for all the truth that he has

          destroyed (burnt)
     War
       Coincides with Montag’s inner turmoil
       External vs. Internal War
   Men on the tracks
       Opposite of men in society
       Camp fire = beacon
            Warmth, safety, intellect
            “Burn Right”
   Montag’s fake death
                 Shows dishonesty of the society
                 Old Montag is dead
            Rebirth motif (recurring subject, theme, idea)
   War
      City destroyed

      Symbolic

         Our ignorance will destroy us

   Phoenix
      Continual rebirth

      Society=Phoenix

         Hope for future

         Men who rebuild it remember why/how it was

          destroyed
         Hope for future/mankind BURNS BRIGHT!
