About This Document: A team of engineers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, announced in November that they've developed a superblack coating that absorbs light across multiple wavelength bands. The material absorbs on average more than 99% of the ultraviolet, visible, infrared, and far-infrared light that hits it, said John Hagopian, the NASA engineer leading the effort. The team has grown the nanotubes on silicon, silicon nitride, titanium, and stainless steel, materials commonly used in space-based scientific instruments, Hagopian said. Tests run on the material show it's especially useful for a variety of spaceflight applications where observing in multiple wavelength bands is important to scientific discovery, such as stray-light suppression, Hagopian said.
