9 A SENATE RESOLUTION
10
11 TO CONGRATULATE MRS. BERNICE SKINNER OF
12 COLUMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF HER NINETIETH
13 BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY
14 CELEBRATION AND MUCH HEALTH AND HAPPINESS IN
15 THE DAYS TO COME.
16
17 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are delighted
18 to learn that Mrs. Bernice Skinner of Columbia will celebrate her
19 ninetieth birthday on November 2, 2009; and
20
21 Whereas, Bernice Skinner was born on November 2, 1919, when
22 the twentieth century was still in its youth, and she has been
23 witness to nearly all the incredible changes and developments that
24 have come to this nation from that time into the twenty-first
25 century; and
26
27 Whereas, after enjoying a life and career in the Boston area, where
28 she served for many years in public service and as a community
29 organizer and champion of causes, Mrs. Skinner relocated to
30 northeast Columbia in the late 1980s; and
31
32 Whereas, as a personable and warm human being, she could easily
33 be found on any given day in the yard of her new home in the
34 Springwood Lake community. This is where neighbors and
35 passersby would see this humanitarian, fondly known as “Mrs. B.,”
36 and come to know her; and
37
38 Whereas, drawing on a life of public service and a love for people,
39 Mrs. Skinner diligently set out to foster much-needed changes in
40 her neighborhood and inspired others to do the same. Under her
41 leadership, the community acquired additional street lighting, new
42 roads, stop signs, traffic lights, cleanups, and enforcement of many
[786] 1
1 zoning ordinances. Among other worthy projects, she proposed to
2 public officials the idea of a senior activity center in her area, an
3 idea which is now a reality. For her extensive service to the
4 citizens of both Boston and Columbia, she has received numerous
5 awards; and
6
7 Whereas, upon her relocation to Columbia, Bernice Skinner did
8 not neglect the assembly of the saints, nor does she at the present
9 day, being a committed member of Little Zion Baptist Church of
10 Blythewood; and
11
12 Whereas, Mrs. Skinner and her husband, Troy Skinner, have five
13 children, who have given their parents the joy of thirty-two
14 grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and one
15 great-great-grandchild; and
16
17 Whereas, in recognition of her ninetieth birthday, her family will
18 honor Mrs. Skinner with a celebratory gathering on Saturday,
19 November 7, 2009; and
20
21 Whereas, the Senate is proud to honor this truly lovely lady at the
22 celebration of her ninetieth birthday and joins with her family and
23 friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary
24 milestone. Now, therefore,
25
26 Be it resolved by the Senate:
27
28 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution,
29 congratulate Mrs. Bernice Skinner of Columbia on the occasion of
30 her ninetieth birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration
31 and much health and happiness in the days to come.
32
33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
34 Mrs. Bernice Skinner.
