We will learn to:
 Multiply decimals by whole numbers.
 Multiply decimals by decimals.
 To apply multiplying decimals to problem
solving.
To multiply decimals by
whole numbers:
 Step 1: Multiply the
factors to get the =factor
product.
 Line up the factors =factor
according to the
columns, not by decimal =product
points.
 Take 2.55 x 13 =
To multiply decimals by
whole numbers:
 Step 2: Multiply. Ignore =factor
the decimal points for
now.                                    =factor
 If you need to regroup, do so as you
would when multiplying whole
numbers.

=product
To multiply decimals by
whole numbers:
 Step 3: Place the
decimal point in the =factor
product.                                                  =factor
1. Count the number of
places to the right of the
decimal point in the
factors
2. Start at the number on
the far right of the
answer. Count the same =product
number of places to the
left.
3. Write the decimal point Answer: ____________ =product
there. The final answer
is the product.
Now, let’s try…

We will learn to:
 Divide decimals by whole numbers.
 Divide decimals by decimals.
 Apply dividing decimals to problem solving.
To divide decimals by
whole numbers:
 Step 1: Set up the
problem. Divide the
dividend by the divisor
to find the quotient.
 ex.
To divide decimals by
whole numbers:
 Step 2: Write the
decimal point in the
quotient. Put the
decimal point above the
decimal point in the
dividend.
To divide decimals by
whole numbers:
 Step 3: Divide.
 Add zeros as
placeholders if you find
that you cannot divide.
 The final answer is the
quotient.
