This course is modeled after the new Colorado State Standards for 8th grade. We will
cover a variety of topics in Physical Science, Life Science and Earth Science. This course will
utilize a variety of teaching methods to meet the standards. Among these are lecture, reading
assignments, labs, and projects.

Grades will be based on a total point system for daily work collected in the notebook, lab
assignments, quizzes, projects and tests. The following standard breakdown will be used:
90-100% = A
80- 89% = B
70- 79% = C
60- 69% = D
0- 59% = F
Students who miss class will have as much time as they missed to make-up their work. For
example, a student who has missed 2 classes will have 2 additional days to complete their
work. I am available before or after school to help students get make-up work.

E x p e c t a t i o n s
Students will be expected to follow the CMS Code in class:
Be Safe
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Students will bring a spiral notebook that will be left in the science room.
Students will challenge themselves, even if that involves making mistakes along the way.

Seeing as though we have will have weekend homework

C O S c i e n c e S t a n d a r d s - 8th Grade
Physical Science
1. Identify and calculate the direction and magnitude of forces that act on an object, and
explain the results in the object’s change of motion
2. There are different forms of energy, and those forms of energy can be changed from one
form to another – but total energy is conserved
3. Distinguish between physical and chemical changes, noting that mass is conserved during
any change
4. Recognize that waves such as electromagnetic, sound, seismic, and water have common
characteristics and unique properties

Life Science
1. Human activities can deliberately or inadvertently alter ecosystems and their resiliency
2. Organisms reproduce and transmit genetic information (genes) to offspring, which
influences individuals’ traits in the next generation

Earth Systems Science
1. Weather is a result of complex interactions of Earth's atmosphere, land and water, that are
driven by energy from the sun, and can be predicted and described through complex models
2. Earth has a variety of climates defined by average temperature, precipitation, humidity, air
pressure, and wind that have changed over time in a particular location
3. The solar system is comprised of various objects that orbit the Sun and are classified
based on their characteristics
4. The relative positions and motions of Earth, Moon, and Sun can be used to explain
observable effects such as seasons, eclipses, and Moon phases
