Childhood

• Born the 20th of April 1889 in

Braunau am Inn, Austria-

Hungary. Son to Alois and

Klara.

• Originally, Adolf

Schicklgruber changed to

Hitler with the acceptance of

his father’s family

• Family moved because of his

father’s work to Linz, Austria

then eventually ending up in

Lambach, Austria.

• Develops a talent for drawing

and changes to a “technical

school” rather then a public

school.

• Decides on career as artist

• Alois wished for Hitler to

become a government official.

• After the death of his father on

Adolescence

January 3rd1903, Adolf,

wanting to be an artist, leaves

for Vienna.

• Travels and explores the city.

• After the death of his mother

on December 21st 1907,

packs his things and moves to

Vienna permanently.

• Is not excepted into art school

and does not have the

qualifications for architect

school.

• Worked in factories, selling his

cheap paintings, and living off

homeless shelters until 1913.

Hitler in WWI

• Upon receiving the last of his

money from the estate o his mother

and father Adolf Hitler moved to

Munich, Germany, already a

ferocious anti-Semite and German

nationalist.

• Fled from duty, avoiding fighting for

the Austrian’s in WWI, claiming he

was “unfit for duty”.

• When Germany joined the war he

petitioned to the king to fight in 16th

Bavarian Regiment.

•Fought in: 1st Battle of Ypres, Battle

of the Somme, Battle of Arras, Battle

of Passchendaele.

Hitler in WWI, part 2

• Was wounded twice, once in

the groin/thigh area during the

Battle of the Somme, then by

mustard gas (Logan calm

down) later in the war.

• During his time in hospital,

blinded by the poison gas,

Hitler decided it was his destiny

to save Germany.

• Hitler was awarded the Iron

Cross Second Class then the

Iron Cross First Class. These

awards were rare to give to

someone of such a low rank.

• Hitler was blind in the hospital

when news of Germany’s

surrender reached him. Hitler much later, but notice

the Iron Cross.

Discovery of Politics

• First started studying politics and The broad masses of

people during his time in Vienna.

• The number of party and SA

members grew dramatically.

• The Hitlerjugend was also

founded at this time.

The Beer Hall Putsch and Jail

• November 8th and November 9th 1923.

• Hitler intended to lead his supporters and SA ‘thugs’ to

the War Ministry and take over the government.

• Not a great call on that one Adolf.

• The State and local police responded firing on the crowd.

• Hitler was wounded but fled. (He was later arrested)

• 16 party members were killed.

• Of the key party members, Rohm, Dr. Wilhelm Frick and

Ludendorff were all let go. Goring was let go though he

was severely wounded.

• Hitler was tried and found guilty of High Treason.

Sentenced to 5 years in Landsberg Prison. During the

trial Hitler gave a famous speech earning him and the

party respect and more followers.

• He was release on the 20th of December 1924 after only

9 months in prison for good behavior.

• During his time in prison Hitler wrote Mein Kampf

Series of Failed Elections

• From the time of his release Hitler and the Nazi party

decided to take power by legal means.

• The Nazi party was elected to the Reichstag in May

1924.

• They then caused a series of elections with the hope of

winning a majority government.

• These took place in: December 1924, May 1928,

September 1930, July 1932, November 1932, March

1933.

• President Hindenburg, looking for peace in the

Reichstag and the country, appointed two Chancellors

before Hitler, Papen and Schleicher.

Hitler Elected Chancellor

• January 30th 1933 Hitler

was sworn in as

Chancellor.

• His cabinet was not who

he wanted and posed

much opposition to him.

This was intentionally done

by Hindenburg to decrease

Hitler’s power.

• Using the threat of a

communist revolt and the

mysterious burning of the

Reichstag in February 27th

1933 (now who coulda

done that?) Hitler secured

emergency powers from

Hindenburg.

Hitler Becomes Fuhrer and

Reichskanzler

• Hitler imposed new laws upon

the Reichstag, the key one

being the “Enabling Act”. This

gave Hitler complete control

(second only to Hindenburg) for

four years.

• Hitler soon made it illegal for

any other parties to oppose the

Nazis.

• Upon the death of Hindenburg

on August 2nd 1934 Hitler’s

cabinet passed legislation

making him president.

• Hitler was now Fuhrer and

Reichzkanzler (Leader and

Chancellor of the Reich)
