									INTRODUCTION TO RED HAT ENTERPRISE
VIRTUALIZATION FOR SERVERS
Server virtualization offers tremendous benefits for enterprise IT organizations through server consolidation, hardware
abstraction, and improved operational efficiency. The Red Hat® Enterprise Virtualization portfolio builds upon the Red Hat®
Enterprise Linux platform, which is trusted by organizations around the world for mission-critical workloads, to offer an end-to-
end virtualization solution for both servers and desktops. Combined with KVM, the latest generation of virtualization
technology, Red Hat® Enterprise Virtualization for Servers delivers a secure, robust virtualization platform with high
performance and scalability for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows guests.

The Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization TCO Calculator recommends an appropriate server hardware and software configuration
using Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers to support a variety of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Microsoft Windows
workloads. The tool then compares the recommended Red Hat solution with analogous configurations based on VMware and
Microsoft virtualization technologies. This comparison is based on publicly available retail pricing for the United States as of
October 2009. Pricing is subject to change without notice and local variations. All default pricing information can be updated
by the user.

TCO COMPARISON
Table 1 below shows a three year comparison of the potential costs of acquisition and support for your Red Hat Enterprise
Virtualization for Servers configuration with analogous costs for VMware vSphere 4.0 and Microsoft Hyper-V 2008 R2
configurations. Our calculator considers different scenarios for guest operating system pricing, such as individual licenses,
licenses bundled with hypervisors, and unlimited guest options on either all hosts or a subset of hosts, and uses the lowest
price option. Please note that you may choose to license your guest operating systems differently based on architectural
decisions or flexibility of unlimited guest options, and those options would be priced higher. According to this analysis the Red
Hat solution is expected to save 11 026 627RUR over a similar solution using VMware and 6 322 365RUR over an alternative
using Microsoft Hyper-V.

PHYSICAL SERVERS
Based on the requirements identified above, the tool recommends the following number of physical servers for each of the
virtualization options.

Desired server architecture: 2 Sockets (quad core) 32GB

Server Configurations Red Hat VMware Microsoft

Number of physical servers 34 34 50

Total available virtual CPUs 244 244 195

Total available memory 1 632 1 632 1 600

The tool recommends the minimum number of physical servers to meet both the virtual CPU count (cores) and memory
requirements for the virtual machines. The virtual CPU computation is based on multiplying the required number virtual CPUs
times the average expected virtual machine utilization compared with the number of cores per server times the average
expected utilization for the physical servers. The memory computation for the Red Hat and VMware configurations is based
on multiplying the available memory in the physical servers by a factor of 150% to reflect the memory page sharing capabilities
in these solutions. Microsoft Windows Hyper-V does not have similar memory sharing capabilities, so no uplift is applied for
the memory requirements for this option1. The calculator then uses the server configuration chosen by the user and selects
the number of servers required to meet both the CPU and the memory requirements of all the virtual machines.

1 In comparisons with Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer, both systems without memory overcommit, VMware routinely uses a
memory overcommit ratio of 200%. Based on our experience with VMware memory consolidation in real world deployments and testing on
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, we believe that a ratio of 150% is more realistic, and therefore use that for both Red Hat and VMware
solutions. Microsoft does not have overcommit, and so still requires sufficient physical memory for the virtual memory in all VMs at a 1:1
     ratio. See for example http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/technology/vmware_cost_comparison_chart.pdf

VIRTUAL SERVER CONFIGURATIONS

The following detailed server configurations are based on the physical server configurations described above and the software
licensing requirements described here.

The virtual server configurations require three software components:

    1. Guest Operating Systems Licenses – Each virtual machine requires a license of either Microsoft Windows Server or
         Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

    2. Virtualization Hypervisor – The hypervisor is a layer of software between the hardware and the guest operating
systems that supports sharing hardware resources for multiple virtual machines.

    3. Hypervisor Management Console – A management facility is required for the configuration and management of the
hypervisor and guest operating system software.

Vendor licensing models:

    Guest Operating Systems Licenses

 Red Hat Enterprise Linux Subscriptions – Red Hat Enterprise Linux can be licensed in one of four ways:
Individual Subscription, 4 Pack per server, Unlimited Guset Pack per socket, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Advanced Platform running as a hypervisor (this option available for Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization only). Red
Hat Enterprise Linux individual subscriptions are priced per virtual guest and support a single virtual machine.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux as a Virtual Guest (4 guests per server) subscriptions are priced per physical host and
support up to 4 Red Hat Enterprise Linux guests per licensed server. Red Hat Enterprise Linux as a Virtual Guest
(unlimited guests per socket) subscriptions are priced per processor socket on each physical host and support
unlimited Red Hat Enterprise Linux guests per socket on licensed servers. With Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization
for Servers only, you can choose to purchase a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform subscription for use
as a hypervisor, with which you receive unlimited virtual machines on each licensed server. The tool
recommends the lowest cost valid option for Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions.

 Microsoft Windows Server Licensing – Microsoft Windows Server comes in three editions; Standard, Enterprise
and Datacenter. Standard and Enterprise are licensed on a per server basis. Standard supports a single virtual
machine per license. Enterprise supports up to four virtual machines per license. Datacenter is licensed on a
per socket basis and supports unlimited virtual machines. The tool recommends the lowest cost option between
a combination of Standard and Enterprise licenses or Datacenter licenses.

    Virtualization Hypervisor

 Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Hypervisor – This hypervisor is available as either a bare metal hypervisor,
which is bundled with Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers (priced per licensed socket), or it is included
with Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform (purchased separately).

 VMware Hypervisor – VMware packages their hypervisor in four editions; Standard, Advanced, Enterprise and
Enterprise Plus. Standard has not been included in the model, since it lacks key enterprise features. Enterprise
also has not been included, since it will no longer be available after 2009. Both Advanced and Enterprise Plus
are licensed on a per socket basis.

 Microsoft Hyper-V – Microsoft Hyper-V technology is included in all editions of Microsoft Windows Server
licenses. It is also available as a free standalone product, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008. The tool does not
include Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008, since it does not support key enterprise features such as live migration.
Microsoft Windows Server licenses are available on a per server or per socket basis as described above.

    Hypervisor Management Console

 Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager for Servers – This is included at no additional charge with all Red Hat
Enterprise Virtualization for Servers subscriptions, which is licensed per managed socket.

 VMware vCenter Server Standard Edition – A license is required for every 300 virtual machines. Foundation
Edition has not been included in this tool, since it only supports 3 physical hosts.

 Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager – This is licensed per managed physical server.
