The Movie Lives On

Carrie the movie is a 1976 film adaptation of the novel with the same name written by Stephen King. King

wrote the novel the year prior and it was known to be the first of his books to be bought for film rights.

It starred Sissy Spacek as the main character of Carrie. This role eventually earned her an Academy

Award nomination for the Best Actress Category. Her portrayal was directed by Brian de Palma who had

a great heavy lending from the movies made by Alfred Hitchcock. This gave Carrie the same kind of feel

and character.

As for box office standing, Carrie the movie generated a domestic gross of $33,800,000. A huge profit

earned from its original budget of merely $1.8 million. In 1976, it was named one of the best films after

Steven Spielberg's Jaws shown the year before.

The movie adhered to most of the characters depicted in the novel in the beginning of the draft. However,

as it should be, later on became restricted due to the financial situation that surrounded it. A lot of the

scenes and important details had to be taken out from the first draft. Even the principal character of Carrie

the movie did not truthfully reflect how she was originally described in King's novel.

Carrie the movie had its share of the limelight. It was one of a handful of horror films that ever caught the

attention of critiques. The award-giving bodies in which it had been given the hopeful spots gave it credit,

in addition to the Best Actress nomination. The Best Supporting Actress from the Academy Award and

Golden Globe Award were also given. The motion picture award was given to Piper Laurie who breathed

life into the character of Carrie's mother Margaret White.

Additionally, the film has received various recognitions including being placed on the 86th rank among

The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time in 2008. Hailed 46th by the American Film Institute's 100 Greatest

Cinema Thrills and the eighth position on The 100 Scariest Movie Moments (2004). Even the novel writer

King himself had said that it was a good movie. In spite of the fact that the 1976 film had departed from

his some of his core ideas in the novel.

Despite the great accomplishment, the 1976 film has received the reproduction and various adaptations

failed to impress on Broadway stage plays. It was hugely slammed for its unsuccessful turns, including

the 1999 sequel of The Rage: Carrie 2. Also, a novel-to-television remake in 2002 which were all

negatively received.

Many reviewers and critiques alike have said Carrie the movie would surely go down in history as one of

the greatest Hollywood horror classics. That it would continue to scare future generations for its intense

and raw human emotions. The high school setting in which Carrie White and the people from her school

would remain etched in the memories of viewers in 1976 and in the present.
