Aims of the School Travel Plan
We know that the majority of children and adults want to use a
healthy form of transport for their journey to school.
This plan sets out measures to educate pupils and parents about
healthy lifestyles, which includes safe walking and cycling. In
order to ensure the sustainability of measures which educate
pupils, we need to improve facilities for pedestrians and
cyclists, so as to increase the number of pupils walking or
cycling.
These aims will be shared with new parents at our annual induction
meetings and regular updates on relevant issues will be given in
our school newsletters.
As a school, we are strongly committed to improving our local
environment and believe there is an urgent need to reduce the
number of car journeys to and from our school. By encouraging
alternative modes of travel, we can help save energy, reduce
fossil fuel consumption and minimize air and noise pollution in
our community.
We believe that by promoting walking to school, our pupils and
parents will improve their own levels of fitness, increase their
awareness of the environmental issues surrounding car use and
encourage a positive attitude to walking in general
This plan is written within the guidelines produced by
Northamptonshire County Council. It will be reviewed annually by
governors and amended whenever necessary

1. Description of the School
Description of School Location
Easton Garford Endowed CE School is a small school with 41
children on roll aged between 4 and 9 years, who attend from
8:40am to 3:30pm. A proportion of pupils are eligible for Free
School Meals, but parents choose to provide meals themselves. We
are currently investigating the possibility of introducing hot
meals, but this will be subject to the results of the parental
consultation.
A number of children travel to school by bus, but we do not
currently have any children for whom transport is provided as part
of a Special Educational Needs statement.
The villages of Easton, Duddington and Collyweston are within the
school’s catchment area. The school enjoys a good working
relationship with Easton Pre-School, and pupils from the Pre-
School join our roll each September. The school currently offers
a Club Hub which offers opportunities for pupils to engage with:
Physical activity (football, dance, aerobics, etc.)
Healthy Eating (cookery)
Computer literacy (Mrs Labuschagne – parent)
Artistic development (Mrs Winstone)
Confidence through the development of Martial Arts (Mr
Johnson)
Using paper questionnaires, online surveys and individual
interviews, the school has consulted parents with regard to the
possibility of implementing Breakfast and After-School Childcare.
It is clear that, although parents are interested in after-school
clubs, they do not require school-led childcare facilities. We
therefore do not run a Breakfast Club. After-School Clubs were
recently reintroduced by the current Headteacher.
The staffing structure is as follows:
One Headteacher
Three Teachers (2.0 FTE)
One Secretary
Two Special Needs Support Assistants
Three Teaching Assistants
Two Mid-Day Supervisors
One Caretaker
The Royal Horticultural Society uses the school premises for its
annual show during the Summer Holidays, which are well attended by
local residents, as well as plant and flower enthusiasts.
The village provides a mixture of council and owner-occupied
housing for a population of approximately five hundred. Its
4
location and proximity to the town of Stamford, plus easy access
to the A1, have meant new building development during the last ten
years and an influx of commuting professionals.

2. Description of the transport problems
Travel and Transport Problems
Most of the children attending the school live in the village;
many are brought by car. Children from outside of the village are
brought to school by car, or school bus. Busy periods of the day
are morning and afternoon opening and closure times. The school is
positioned on one of two main routes in and out of the village,
and traffic coming from the A43 has little opportunity to slow
down before it reaches New Road.
Of the thirteen members of staff described in Section 1, three
live in the village (23%). The rest live between 5 and 38 miles
away from the school. There are six parking spaces in the school
car park: those who arrive first use these spaces; the rest fill
up the car park (double parking). On occasions, staff park on the
road. This can add to the traffic issues.

The following section “3. Survey Results” indicates that there are
a number of key transport issues which need to be addressed:
Traffic is too fast
Parking at the school
Parking near the school
Too much traffic
Traffic is too slow
In addition to the surveys shown overleaf, discussion with parents
have raised the following ideas for improving traffic problems:
Speed bumps
Reduction of the speed limit to 20mph
An area for parents to stand
A shaded area within the school playground

arising from new developments in education and transport
provision and the STP will be revised as necessary to take
account of these;
Quick “Hands Up” Surveys will be carried out termly, starting
in April 2008 to assess whether there has been a shift in
travel arrangements;
The next Parent/Staff Survey will be carried out in October
2008 and annually thereafter;
The School Travel Plan will be reviewed in March 2009 and
annually thereafter by the Safe Travel Group.
