PROFILE
A Cambridge graduate in Metallurgy and Materials Science, Nick Thorne is also a Chartered Engineer
with considerable experience in a diverse range of manufacturing businesses. This includes 10 years
in the secondary aluminium industry in the UK, Europe, Russia and North America. Used to full
budgetary responsibility, developing and delivering strategic business, investment and project plans.

SKILLS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Production Management
As Interim Manager running a £30m turnover secondary aluminium smelter. This role encompassed
all production and maintenance aspects of scrap handling, reverbatory and rotary furnace operation,
metal pump, swarf dryer. Responsibility was also assumed for Energy Management, Climate Change
policies, HR issues, organisation of shift patterns giving rise to flexibility and cost effectiveness, and
latterly for Commercial Department functions.
Project Management
Conducted feasibility study under the DTI’s Investigating an Innovative Idea program. Subsequently
managed the resultant project, successfully installing ground breaking aluminium scrap treatment
plant.
Strategic Player
Formulated and carried out a strategy to reduce company overheads by consolidating production from
two sites to one. This resulted in a seamless transfer of production, a £300,000 reduction in
overheads and the release of capital by the sale of one site.
Devised and implemented strategy that led to a 12% increase in output for 7% less labour cost in a
continuous shift production facility.
Leadership
As Factory Manager of the Marley Roof Tiles at Poole led, in extremely difficult circumstances, the
entire closure process from concept to completion, negotiating with unions and communicating with all
parties and external media. A dignified and trouble free redundancy program and tidy plant and site
disposal was achieved.
As Works Director of Flogates Ltd of Goole, led the site personnel through the trade sale of the
business to Vesuvius UK.
Business Acumen
As interim Operations Manager, guided the corporate recovery of a failing £4m MBO to take it from
the verge of insolvency to being re-financed and having a positive cash flow within 6 months. This
entailed quickly establishing the failing aspects of the business and applying appropriate measures to
ensure survivability of the organisation.
People Skills
Introduced a fundamental culture change within a £12m turnover, 170 employee factory site. Devised
and implemented a radical new deal to convert a traditional hourly paid, unionised workforce to a
progressive, monthly staff, ‘Single Status’ culture. Union membership dropped to 15%; labour costs
brought under control and supervision reduced by the introduction of self-managed teams.
Communication
Conducted employee surveys, introduced Team Briefing, a Works Council and a regular internal
newsletter. Within six months achieved a palpable improvement in morale and employee involvement
within a diverse workforce operating complex continuous shift systems.
Analytical Skills
Restored business to health following a near disastrous fire. Prior establishment of an excellent
disaster plan, training of operators and followed by thorough after event enquiries and tremendous
commitment and resourcefulness. Obscure cause of fire established, rectified and the damage
repaired with the operation up and running with minimum disruption to customers.
Technical Skills
Developed the production of a complex, polymer modified artificial slate from laboratory concept to
£6m per annum volume production. Used continuous improvement techniques, data analysis,
technical ingenuity and resourcefulness to manage the project team. Secured the security of the site
by the successful production of a unique and profitable product.

    improvements, and revised factory ergonomics.
   Formulated and enacted strategy to reduce company overheads by consolidating the firm’s
    production from two locations onto the Goole site. This seamless transfer of production capacity
    gave a £300,000 reduction in overheads and rationalised management structures.
