Math 8 – Go over As. Test 6.3 Multiplying Proper Fractions. Begin Lesson 6.4 Multiplying Improper
Fractions and Mixed Numbers. We began the lesson by reviewing how to converts Whole numbers
and mixed numbers into improper fractions. To multiply mixed numbers and whole numbers you
must first convert them into improper fractions. Once they are improper fractions you can use the
multiplying fraction rule. Multiply the numerator by the numerator and the denominator by the
denominator. Go over the key ideas and do questions 4 – 12 on page 220. Do the calculations and not
the models. Due for tomorrow.

NOTE: As. Test 6.4 Multiplying Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers will be on Wednesday
Feb. 8.

Social 7 – We continued working on “Telling Our Story: Acadians in the New World” Students
received a rubric describing how the assignment will be marked. The bulk of the assignment should be
done by now. Students will have tomorrow’s class to apply finishing touches to their work.

Social 7 – We continued working on “Telling Our Story: Acadians in the New World” Students
received a rubric describing how the assignment will be marked. The bulk of the assignment should be
done by Monday. Students will have Tuesday’s class to apply finishing touches to their work.
NOTE: The “Telling Our Story: Acadians in the New World”assignment will be due by
Wednesday February 8.

Math 8 – Continue Lesson 6.3 Multiplying Proper Fractions. Review how to multiply proper fractions
using Manipulatives such as paper folding, using diagrams, and using a rule. Review questions 3-6 on
page 214. Assign questions 7-14 on pages 214-214.

NOTE: As. Test 6.3 Multiplying Proper Fractions will be TOMORROW.

Social 7 – For the first part of the class we went over some material pertaining to the drama
presentation that is coming to the school tomorrow. Second part of the class we continued working on
“Telling Our Story: Acadians in the New World”
NOTE: The “Telling Our Story: Acadians in the New World”assignment will be due by
Wednesday February 8.

Social 7 – Today students received work sheets to help them get started on the Acadia Assignment.

Math 8 – Continue Lesson 6.1 Multiplying a Fraction and a Whole Number. Go over questions 4-6
on page 202. Assign questions 7-14 on page 203. Students had time to finish most of the questions in
class. Science midterm is tomorrow.

Social 7 – Social 7 Midterm was today. In class we watch an introductory video for the Acadia
assignment. We viewed “The Inner Light”. The story is about how a culture wanted to be
remembered long after it’s culture was destroyed.

Wed. Jan. 25, 2012

Math 8 – Math 8 midterm was today. Today we began lesson 6.1 Multiplying a Fraction and a Whole
Number. We did some fraction review and demonstrated ways to multiply a fraction with a whole
number by using manipulatives, diagrams, paper folding, number lines and a rule. Students received a
small assignment that they finished in class.

Social 7 – Today we began the Acadia Photo Essay with an activity. Tomorrow we will watch an
introductory video.
NOTE: Social 7 Midterm is TOMORROW.

Math 8 – Students had the opportunity to ask any questions from Chapters 1-5. We began reviewing
fractions.

Social 7 – Finish viewing Canada: A People’s History Episode 5 “A Question of Loyalties” Students
are required to take notes and will hand them in for completion marks. Come tomorrow with specific
questions from Chapters 1-5 and the review outline for the midterm.

will bring to life the events that took place in Chapter 6 from 1775 before the American War of

not be on the Midterm Exam.) Important for students to continue reviewing material from chapters 1-

Math 8 – Go over Chapter 5 unit test. Students were to make corrections. Begin preparing for the
Midterm by reviewing Chapter 1. Students were asked to do the following before tomorrow’s class.
Make sure chapter 1 review on pages 156-157 questions 1-5 is done. Review As. Tests 1.1, 1.2, 1.3.
Review Chapter 1 Unit test and Chapter 1 divider assignment. Come to class tomorrow with specific
questions to go over from Chapter one. (This will be our planned method of review for each chapter 1
through 5 for the remainder of the week and next Monday.

a cylinder by using a net and steps showing all work. Reviewed how to calculate surface area of a
cylinder by using a formula. Reviewed questions 3-6 on page 186. Homework check is tomorrow.

between The United States and British North America. We discussed perspectives of American and
Canadian historians and who they believed won the War of 1812. Tomorrow we will re-visit the

Math 8 – Begin Lesson 5.4 Surface Area of a Cylinder. Before starting with the lesson we reviewed
the parts of a circle, area of a circle and circumference of a circle. Demonstrate how to calculate

Math 8 – Continue Lesson 5.3 Surface Area of a Prism Demonstrate how to find the surface area of
three different kinds of triangular prisms. It is important to show ALL STEPS and to show all work
when calculating surface area. Answer will be in square units of measure. For homework: do
questions 5,6,8,10 on page 180. Homework check tomorrow.
NOTE: Assignment test 5.3 Surface Area of a Prism will be on Thursday December 22.

Math 8 – Begin Lesson 5.3 Surface Area of a Prism Demonstrate how to find the surface area of a
cube and a right rectangular prism. It is important to show ALL STEPS and to show all work when
calculating surface area. Answer will be in square units of measure. For homework: do questions 3,4,7
and 11 on pages 180-181.

Social 7 – Begin Chapter 6. Discuss the importance of the 13 colonies breaking away from Britain
and how the Loyalist and refugees from the American War of Independence change the face of
Canada. (Pages 169-177)

Math 8 – Finish Lesson 5.2 Nets of Three-Dimensional Objects. Students continued to work with
math manipulatives to create the nets of right rectangular prisms and three different types of triangular
prisms as well as a composite figure.

Social 7 – Students handed in title page assignment. Went over Chapter 5 test thoroughly.

Math 8 – Today students had a guest speaker in to talk about drugs and drug abuse.

Social 7 – Students had today’s class to work on title pages for Chapter 5. Assignment is due for
tomorrow’s class.

Math 8 – Go over questions: 3-10 on pages 168-169. Begin Lesson 5.2 Nets of Three-Dimensional
Objects. Students worked with Math Manipulatives to create a cube with as many different nets as
they could. Their conclusion was that the maximum number of nets for a cube is 11. No homework.

Social 7 – Chapter 5 test was TODAY. Students began work on chapter 5 title page. They will have
tomorrow’s class to work on the title page as well. Assignment is due for Friday.

Math 8 – Go over Chapter 4 Test. Begin Unit 5 and Lesson 5.1 Views of Three Dimensional Objects.
Demonstrate how to draw 3 views of a 3-d object. Demonstrate how to draw an isometric from three
views. Go over the key ideas. Go over communicate the ideas. No homework.
NOTE: Chapter 4 Divider Assignment was due at the start of the Chapter Test. If it is not
handed in on time the assignment will lose 10% per school day it is late.

video brings to the life the characters and events depicted in Chapter 5. It covers what happened after
the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. Students will be required to take notes using the Netbooks and
will receive a completion mark. Students should continue to work on the Chapter outline. Students
may create flash cards or hand written notes if they wish at home or access their school files from
home using myfile. Tomorrow students will have the opportunity to complete and go over their
outlines on the netbooks.

Percents. Demonstrate how to calculate the GST and PST and how to combine them. Demo how to
calculate price including GST, discount and sale price, and sale price with GST. Do questions 4-8 on
pages 148-149.

Social 7 – Finish off reading Chapter 5. Discuss the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and the Quebec
Act. Tomorrow students will receive the Chapter 5 review outline.

Math 8 – Review As. Test 4.2 Fractions, Decimals and Percents. Begin Lesson 4.3 Percent of a
Number. Demonstrate how to use mental math to find the percent of a number using three methods:
doubling, halving, and dividing by ten. Demonstrate how to find the percent of a number by
calculation by converting the percent to a decimal and multiplying the number by the decimal. This
method could be used for calculating discount, sale price, commission, interest, GST, etc. Assignment:
do questions 1-4 on pages 141-142.

Social 7 – Finish reading about the Great Deportation and watch Canada: A Peoples History Episode
3 Part 2. This video will bring to life the Great Deportation. Students were to take notes on the video
and handed them in for a completion mark.

Social 7 – Day four of “How do I get what I want. After negotiations students returned to their
jigsaw groups to discuss their most successful negotiation and least successful negotiation and the
factors contributing to both. Students were to start to think about answering the question “If you were
to make an alliance with ONE of the other groups, who would it be and WHY? Tomorrow students
will be required to answer all of these questions on a sheet INDIVIDUALLY. Students will be
required to bring with them all of the sheets used in the “How do I get what I want” activity to help
them answer the questions on the sheet. They will have one period only.

known. Assign questions 3-5 on page 104. Every student had to show Mr. Law their work for question

Exploring the Pythagorean Relationship. Draw and label a right angle triangle. Demonstrate the
relationship between the squares of the legs of a right angle triangle and the square of it’s hypotenuse.
Students then created a model of the Pythagorean Relationship and labeled it. (No homework)

episode will bring to life some of the main explorers and characters during the start of New France.

Chapter 1 Unit Test tomorrow.

Present 3 steps to critiquing graphs. 1) graph type, 2) graph format, 3) graph usefulness. Go over 2
examples of critiquing graphs (pages 28-30) and the Key Ideas/ Communicate the Ideas. For
homework: do questions 4-10 on pages 32-34.

Social 7 – Today we completed reading Chapter 1 and discussed why the 3 First Nations want to keep
a connection to the past and we also talked about talking circles. Students received review handouts to
prepare for the Chapter test. Students will be required to finish the handouts on their own time. We
will be going over the handouts on Monday. For the next few days we will be viewing Canada: A
People’s History Episode 1 “When the World Began” that will bring to life what was taught in
Chapter 1. Students will be required to take notes that will be handed in for completion marks.

Social 7 – Went over Handout 1-4. Students were to use a different color pen or pencil to add missed
points to their lists and to make corrections. Assignment was marked out of 50. It was pointed out that
well over 50 points could have been pulled out of the 3 stories. Today we continued to read in Chapter
1 pages 25-33.

Math 8 – Review As. Test 1.1. Begin Lesson 1.2 Misrepresenting Data. Go over the examples of
misrepresenting data by distorting the scale, distorting the visuals and distorting the size of bars. For
homework: do the ‘Show You Know’s on pages 20, 21 and 22. Students did not have any time to work
on homework in class.

Social 7 – Students will have the period to finish the handout 1-4 on comparing First Nations.
Assignments had to be handed in at the end of the period.

Social 7 – Today we read three different stories about the Mi’kmaq, Haudenosaunee, and Anishinabe
first nations (pages 10-25). Tomorrow students will re-read the stories and pull out the similarities and
differences between them on handout 1-4.

Math 8– Continue Lesson 1.1 Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Graphs. We reviewed the
Key Ideas of 5 different graphs. Review pages 10-11 and the Show You Know at the bottom of page
11. Reviewed Key Ideas. Do Communicate the Ideas with a partner questions 1-3 on page 13. For
homework: do questions 4-9 on pages 13-15. (Students had 25 mins. to work on assignment in class)
Due for tomorrow. Homework check tomorrow.

Social 7 – Students shared with the class where they, their parents, their grandparents and great-
grandparents were born (if they could). This was to illustrate the fact that Canadians came from many
countries. We continued to read pages 3-9 in the textbook. For homework: study the names of the 3
first nations we will look at in this chapter. (page 9).
