Perspectives
4G networks, including WiMAX and LTE, are rapidly increasing in importance. Mobile wireless services are becom-
ing bandwidth-intensive as users access the Internet more often and start to use other data-intensive services such as
streaming video. The whole mobile wireless ecosystem is evolving to accommodate these changes. More powerful ap-
plication processors and platforms are making their way into an increasing variety of devices that have better operating
systems, user interfaces, and larger screens.

The only parts of the ecosystem that are barely keeping up with demand are the existing 3G networks that in some
cases are already experiencing capacity problems. The pricing of plans, usage caps, and restrictions on applications
are all coming into play, but at the expense of the consumer’s experience and the mobile operator’s ability to maximize
revenue. The 4G Research Service addresses the whole ecosystem from a 4G perspective. 4G subscriber growth, 4G
chipsets, 4G devices, and 4G infrastructure buildouts are all tracked and forecast in the 4G Research Service to address
the interest in WiMAX and LTE developments across the ecosystem.

Perspectives
Automobiles, trucks and buses have a great impact on all our lives, whether we own a vehicle or not. Trucks haul and
deliver everything we purchase in stores, and even deliver packages directly to our homes. Cars and buses help us travel
where we need to go, in relative comfort and safety.

The global automobile market currently is dominated by internal combustion engine vehicles, which generate green-
house gases as a by-product of fuel consumption, and those greenhouse gases increasingly are affecting the environ-
ment. While fuel-efficient electric and hybrid-electric vehicles have hardly made a dent in auto markets compared to
gasoline and petroleum-fueled vehicles, this will change in the coming years, as sales of such fuel-efficient vehicles will
grow, driven by factors including rising oil prices, the imminent economic upturn and increasingly stringent government
regulations on vehicle emissions and fuel efficiency.

NextGen Research’s Automotive Technology Research Service tracks the evolution of standard vehicles as well as those
utilizing energy sources other than gasoline or diesel fuel. Research reports in this service also follow the development of
technologies within vehicles that help drivers to be better prepared for external driving conditions, and which ultimately
make passengers safer.

                                                                 featured report
The hybrid-electric and electric vehicle markets have been
growing slowly for several years, but the price premium for
the additional hardware required always has been a sig-
nificant barrier to mass market appeal. The hydraulic and
flywheel energy storage systems remain very much in the
evaluation phase, but they have started to get some serious
consideration in garbage truck and Formula One Racing ap-
plications respectively.

This report combines the recent NextGen vehicle research on
electric vehicles with data from NextGen’s reports on both
consumer and commercial hybrids, to present the overall ve-
hicle sales forecast numbers broken down by hybrid, electric,
and hydraulic architecture from 2008 through 2014. In addi-
tion, NextGen provides analysis of the markets for specific
components used in hybrid and electric vehicles, such as
advanced battery systems and electric motors.

What Questions Does This Report Answer?

• How will the market for hybrid and electric vehicle compo-
nents develop over the forecast period?

• Which regions offer the greatest market potential for hybrid
and electric vehicle components?

• What governmental incentives are in place to sup-
port the development and ownership of hybrid

     Business Mobility Research Service

Perspectives
Business customers, who have received tremendous efficiency gains from mobile services, have traditionally bought
mobile services from telecommunications operators. This pattern is changing as a result of a mobile ecosystem that is
expanding and growing increasingly competitive while at the same time becoming ever more interconnected. The new
mobile capabilities are being created with new device technologies, new access technologies and new applications and
services. And these technology enablers as well as the mobilization of desktop applications and services are in turn
increasing competition and providing more choice for the mobile consumer.

Yet to address the needs of the business customer, no one player can provide all the necessary capabilities, which is
creating a highly interconnected mobile ecosystem. ABI Research’s Business Mobility Research Service will help all
players in the expanded mobile ecosystem by identifying the opportunities and trends as well as providing thoughtful
analysis to mitigate the complexities of this new environment.

Cellular PC Card Modems Research Service

Perspectives
Cellular modem shipments - led by USB modems and embedded radio modules - will grow from nearly 21 million units
sold in 2007 to nearly 200 million modems sold in 2013. USB modems have quickly become the winning form factor due
to the user familiarity of the interface, as well the convenience they offer by including the connection software on the
modem. Computer manufacturers ultimately want cellular modems embedded as radio modules for anytime access to
high-speed mobile data services. As the speeds of cellular data networks increase, portable routers that bridge 3G and
Wi-Fi networks are also increasingly popular.

The Cellular Modem Research Service delivers a comprehensive view of key vendors, form-factors and adoption of
3G/4G wireless protocols for mobile data communications. In addition to cornerstone research reports and timely
analysis briefs, biannual market data studies are published to track global movements in segmentation, shipments and
revenues.

     Clean Telecoms Research Service

Perspectives
Clean telecoms consists of corporate initiatives and technology innovations in the telecoms sector that are aimed at
reducing energy consumption and focusing on alternative energy solutions for powering networks. Both mobile carri-
ers and equipment vendors have been making efforts at reducing the carbon footprint across their own enterprises. The
global economic slowdown has helped the clean telecoms sector as carriers aim to reduce their operating costs, a large
component of which are spent on powering base station equipment. The equipment vendors have accelerated their
development efforts and R&D on green base station equipment and alternative energy sources such as solar and wind
power. As carriers in emerging markets roll out networks in rural markets, energy-efficient base stations and alternative
energy technologies help keep costs down.

ABI Research’s Clean Telecoms Research Service aims to provide benchmarking of green technologies, green carriers
and green equipment vendors - in the process defining and introducing metrics that will help the industry make better
sense of what is green and what is not. The Service is led by a strong focus on quantitative forecasts of clean telecoms
relating energy savings to cost reductions, finally providing a carbon emission perspective.

     Connected Home Devices Research Service

Perspectives
As consumer device markets mature, the need to add incremental value to these products/services mounts as
companies look to spur demand. Examples of differentiation have included HD, interactivity, and tailored over-the-top
services. While these endeavors have had mixed degrees of success, over time these markets will continue to engender
new levels of complexity.

What began as an experimental phase online, with video sharing sites, social networking, VOD, etc., has now begun to
diffuse throughout the digital value chain - seeping down into the core technologies underlying the devices we use every
day. Ultimately the digital home ceases to resemble an isolated node, but rather part of the greater network, where video
content is available on multiple devices in the home and on the go. As a result, the industry questions where and how
video will be distributed among a growing number of consumer electronics devices. In addition, the control issues faced
by content holders, service providers, and device manufacturers must be addressed.

The interplay between infrastructure, networks, and devices is evolving with such rapidity that the future remains quite
fluid. And we shouldn’t forget the consumer, who often decides which technology succeeds and fails. ABI Research’s
Connected Home Devices Research Service tracks the hot topics surrounding connected consumer devices, as well as
converged video devices and emerging video technologies. Topics include networked/Internet-connected TVs, 3DTV,
media servers, digital still cameras and camcorders, as well as video connectivity technologies such as Wireless HD, 60
GHz, and MoCA.

     Device Accessories Research Service

Perspectives
During a time when the mobile handset market remains under stress, handset manufacturers and mobile operators are
leaning on the lucrative mobile accessory market to help maintain margins, and for some, strengthen brand image. The
mobile accessory market is filled with a large number of participants, product categories and SKUs, leading to a very
competitive landscape where as much as 40% of the purchases take place at the same time that users purchase their
mobile phone. That reality further complicates one of the key struggles for mobile operators with limited shelf space:
which accessories to stock and which to let go.

The Device Accessories Research Service tracks the worldwide and regional markets for key accessory categories
with biannual tracking of shipments, ASPs and revenue, including in-depth analysis on bundled and aftermarket
opportunities. The Service is designed to provide a continuous flow of information through data files and a diverse set of
focused reports to deliver the required market perspective.

Perspectives
Evolution in technology has changed the way people communicate, socialize and entertain themselves. We have truly
moved into an era where information exchange is not restricted to the living room and can seamlessly travel across geo-
graphical boundaries at the click of a button. Such advancements in technology have given us iPhones, social network-
ing tools, and access to a wide array of content which can be viewed by consumers not only on their television sets but
also on PCs and other portable media devices. Convergence of the three screens, expansion in services made available
to consumers, and new media formats have been catalysts in driving the growth of digital media markets. Technology
providers are incessantly developing and upgrading products and solutions that enable and support delivery of rich me-
dia content to the masses. The rate at which the technology market is transforming itself requires vendors to keep pace
with such innovations in order to provide consumers an enhanced user experience.

Video is a key element that has had a positive impact on the growth of the digital media market both in the entertainment
and enterprise worlds. Emerging media formats, new delivery mechanisms, interactivity, and the flexibility to consume
content at a time, place and device of one’s choice has created a revolution in the industry. In order to deliver such
services to their customers, vendors in this market are developing and providing solutions that are feature-rich, support
multiple media formats, and offer more capacity, faster processing, and higher performance levels.

ABI Research’s Digital Media Research Service focuses on the complete value chain of technology that enables and
supports the process from content creation to delivery and consumption. Analyzing the trends in the market, this Service
provides extensive research on key technology areas such as video servers, digital asset management, digital signage,
video transcoding, ad servers/splicers, digital rights management, and content delivery networks.

Perspectives
Electronics are the building blocks of many technologies. Individually, resistors, capacitors, semiconductors and other
electronics are just inanimate components, but grouped in the right configuration, they can enable access to a world of
information on the Internet, open the covers of e-Books, or tap into alternative energy sources that can help supplant
fossil fuel-based power generation.

The ongoing evolution of electronics allows industries to improve and upgrade, and new industries to arise. Once-novel
developments such as light-emitting diodes are beginning to supplant incandescent light bulbs, as they use far less en-
ergy to generate the same amount of light. As the efficiency of electronics increases with each new generation, electron-
ic products such as photovoltaic cells become increasingly effective as alternative energy sources, computers become
faster, and displays become thinner and more flexible.

NextGen Research’s Electronics Research Service assesses historical and current market demands for specific cat-
egories of electronics, and forecasts the likely progression of the market, in the context of competing technologies and
macroeconomic trends. Reports in this service identify leading companies in each field and growth opportunities for new
and established players.

Perspectives
Increasing awareness of climate change and its likely causes is driving a broad array of industries, and individuals as
well, to modify how they work, play and live. Understanding that most utility-generated electricity is created through the
burning of fossil fuels, which generates greenhouse gases that directly impact global climate, more and more people and
companies are working to mitigate or negate their carbon footprints, in order to lessen their impact on the global ecosys-
tem.

An increasing number of businesses are taking the first step by assessing how much electricity they use, and how they
use it. Many are working to reduce their energy consumption through methods ranging from the use of better insulation
in the construction of their facilities (which saves heat in the winter and electricity for air conditioning in the summer) to
upgrading servers and PC with new models that use far less electricity because they “sleep” when not in use.

Consumers (and utilities as well) are exploring the potential of distributed generation, which allows individuals to gener-
ate their own electricity using the wind, solar energy, geothermal energy, or other means, and to share any excess with
the local power grid.

NextGen Research’s Energy & Green Technology Service examines market sectors involved in power generation as they
increasingly incorporate alternative energy sources, as well as those sectors that must become increasingly green (by
utilizing less-hazardous materials) and energy-efficient to survive in an ever-more-eco-conscious world.

     Home Networking Research Service

Perspectives
The digital home has developed quickly in the last few years, from a conceptual topic to one very much based in real-
ity. Consumers are continually discovering the benefits offered by connected and interoperable devices throughout the
home. Making this evolution easier are home networking devices that have become more straightforward to set up and
use, as well as standards, including DLNA, Wi-Fi, MoCA and others. In addition, digital media have quickly emerged as
consumers view premium and user-generated content over the Internet on PCs, set-top boxes and other consumer elec-
tronics devices, a growing number of which can be connected to the home network.

Interactivity in the home is gaining traction. Consumers have been accustomed to interaction with the PC, but now inter-
activity is moving to the living room, through tru2way and ETV from cable providers, IPTV, and even remote controls. The
question remains, though: who will provide the network connectivity and devices in the home? Will it be the consumer,
a service operator, or a yet-to-be-determined third party? As content delivery continues its move to IP-based systems,
the opportunities for interactivity and advanced applications will continue to increase. Developers are working on new
user interfaces, search tools, and interface devices that will create the ‘wow’ factor for consumers while also easing the
navigation through the plethora of content that is being delivered.

ABI Research’s Home Networking Research Service takes a comprehensive look at the issues impacting the distribution
of data, video, audio, and other content within the connected digital home. This Service follows the key technologies that
enable the connectivity of these devices, including physical and software layer standards, as well as key devices includ-
ing broadband gateways and media servers.

Perspectives
Technology, at its most basic, is the application of some level of knowledge for a practical purpose. The National Acad-
emy of Engineering describes technology as “the process by which humans modify nature to meet their needs and
wants.” It’s the means to an end, where that end can be wanting to speak with someone a great distance away, wanting
to make a financial transaction without using cash, or even cleaning your home without spending all day vacuuming.

Consumers and businesses alike take advantage of technologies on a daily basis. As you’re reading this, you’re using a
computer packed with electronic components, each one of which is a technological marvel. Your computer is connected
to a coaxial or fiber-optic cable, which connects to the Internet in order to access this web site; at each stage, you’re uti-
lizing one or more technologies. Perhaps your computer has a wireless mouse; perhaps your connection to the Internet
is a wireless one as well.

The more sophisticated these technologies become, the simpler they are for the end-user to master, requiring minimal
training. The technologies with which we interact are aimed at helping us achieve our goals more easily and efficiently,
whether those goals involve financial transactions, cleaner homes or access to published content.

This NextGen Research Service includes coverage of consumer-facing technologies, as well as those that can be utilized
by individuals for business purposes.

                                                                   featured report
After a long development and commercialization period,
low-power “electronic ink” displays are going mass market,
thanks mainly to Amazon’s Kindle reader. Almost all current
reader displays, including the one used in the Kindle, license
proprietary technology from Massachussetts-based eInk, Inc.
The Kindle has caught on with early adopters the way Ap-
ple’s iPod did, but just as the iPod was not the first portable
digital music player, neither is the Kindle the first device to
use eInk. What remains to be seen is whether other contend-
ers—some with possibly better technology—will displace the
 Kindle and/or expand the market.
This report covers the market for eInk and competing display
technologies used in electronic book readers, and to be used
in digital signage, retail shelf tags, and other devices.

What Questions Does This Report Answer?

 • How large will the total market for electronic paper be?

 • How fast will it grow?

 • How will new technologies affect market growth? Given
parallels to the iPod and digital music player market, how will
 marketing, design, and strategic
 content alliances come into
 play?

 • How much of the printed book
 market will go electronic?

     Location-Based Services Research Service

Perspectives
Location-Based Services have evolved from simple applications based on mobile network location technologies at the
end of the nineties, to sophisticated GPS-enabled touch screen smartphones and thousands of LBS services available
from third-party developers on a growing number of application stores. Despite advances made in A-GPS, digital maps
and user interface design, the LBS industry is still looking for compelling applications generating sustainable revenue
streams and boosting mass market adoption.

At the same time the LBS ecosystem remains very fragmented and complex with many companies vying for dominance.
New paradigms based on open source approaches, crowd sourcing, and advertising-based business models are open-
ing up the ecosystem to new entrants, increasing the level of competition, and driving uptake which will ultimately make
Location a default enabler of the overall mobile experience. The Location-Based Services Research Service aims to bring
clarity and insight into this challenging and quickly evolving industry.

Perspectives
The use of cellular connectivity embedded into “machines” (defined as non-cellphone/non-computing/non-consumer
electronics devices) is often referred to as “Machine-to-Machine (M2M).” M2M is growing rapidly as companies respond
to regulatory mandates (such as smart metering legislation), the need to operate more efficiently and productively (such
as with fleet management systems), and the desire to introduce new service and product capabilities (such as Pay-As-
You-Drive insurance offers).

At the same time, mobile network operators (MNOs) and other types of connectivity service providers are seeking new
markets to enter as their core voice/data handset markets become saturated and mature. M2M, along with connected
consumer electronics devices and voice/data services in emerging economies, is seen as a key avenue to continued
growth. However, M2M applications are more complex and difficult to develop, deploy, and manage compared to
traditional voice/data handset services, from both a technological and business perspective, and they face a number of
application-specific market issues.

The Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Research Service analyzes the market opportunity and key technology trends for con-
necting “machines” using embedded cellular technologies. The Service tracks sales of embedded cellular modules and
embedded cellular connectivity services, segmented by region, air interface standard, and major application area, on a
quarterly basis. Also, embedded cellular module vendor market shares are provided on an annual basis. Finally, “deep
dive” market research reports into specific major applications such as smart metering, telematics, security, and tele-
health are produced throughout the year.

Perspectives
Long recognized as one of the more resilient sectors of the consumer electronics industry, the mobile handset market
now finds itself in unfamiliar territory as shipment volumes fell in 2009 over the industry’s high water mark in 2008 of 1.2
billion devices. The global market’s annual volume is currently forecast to be down 8% this year, but will be revaluated
once the second quarter’s volume is counted and verified. Smartphones have been a growing bright spot for the indus-
try, but rather than adding a level of volume that could have a significant effect on the industry’s ability to push positive
growth, their greatest contribution last year was the awareness they generated. New smartphones are now appealing to
subscribers who are just shopping for their next mobile phone, but not necessarily a smartphone. In a time when there
are few technologies left that can resonate with consumers on the same level that color screens and cameras did to
cause an inflection point through upgrades, the interest in new iconic devices such as the Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS can
be what charges consumers interest in the latest and greatest, even if a smartphone is not in their future.

Perspectives
The market for mobile money services is on the cusp of explosive growth. This is proved by the pace of recent an-
nouncements about using mobile services and applications for mobile banking and payments. PayPal says that down-
loads of its mobile payment application are experiencing tremendous growth and it attributes consumer adoption of
smartphones as a primary driver. Vodafone announced in late June 2009 that six million Kenyans now use its Safaricom
(Vodafone-owned) mobile phones to make person-to-person payments less than two years after launch of the service.
As of February, just under two million Bank of America customers are using mobile banking. Key players within the mo-
bile industry are aligning themselves to enable mobile money services.

ABI Research recognized early the market opportunities that could result when the mobile phone became the “mobile
wallet” and launched its Mobile Money Research Service, which examines a comprehensive range of mobile money ser-
vices, including mobile banking, person-to-person payments, international remittance, and both NFC and non-NFC-en-
abled mobile commerce, across all value chain participants from operators to banks to application/platform developers.

Perspectives
With carriers increasingly depending on their revenues from mobile data and with voice becoming a commodity, mobile
network infrastructure needs to keep up with the pace of change. The carriers realize that they need more agile, recon-
figurable, scalable, easy to deploy and cost-effective equipment in order to meet next-generation service challenges.

Fundamental changes are occurring, from Single RAN base stations and RAN sharing on the radio access end, to IP
based transport in the backhaul, and the evolution of the packet core network. To track these changes, the Mobile
Networks Research Service covers the trends in the mobile infrastructure market from radio access to backhaul and the
core network.

     Semiconductors Research Service

Perspectives
ABI Research had its beginnings nearly 20 years ago examining new markets for semiconductor manufacturers. Over
the years, our coverage expanded to encompass not just the semiconductors markets themselves, but also the markets
that they in turn enable. In-depth analysis of these markets allows us to better forecast the opportunities for both the end
devices/services and the enabling components.

In addition, the semiconductor business is constantly pulled in new directions by new market demands. Likewise, the
semiconductor business opens new markets. These are the two factors that drive much of our coverage today. The
sudden growth of GPS connectivity, the emergence of WiMAX and mobile TV created new markets that spawned new
opportunities for semiconductor vendors. Meanwhile developments in Gallium Nitride, MEMS and other technologies are
enabling the creation of entirely new markets for products and services.

By researching the end-markets and semiconductors in one cycle, we can better evaluate each respective opportunity.
The collection of research within our Semiconductors Research Service best represents new opportunities for startup
and established semiconductor suppliers across the connectivity landscape.

     Short-Range Wireless Research Service

Perspectives
The short-range wireless market is constantly evolving. Bluetooth, NFC, UWB, ZigBee, and Wi-Fi are all improving and
evolving. At times, one technology attempts to move into another’s core area. At other times, two technologies pair up to
become complementary or even synergetic.

Device vendors across various device classes must decide which short-range wireless technologies to include in device
designs. A larger number of technologies translates to increased utility in the device, but also means increased costs.
The Short-Range Wireless Research Service provides forecasts for these technologies and combination chipset ship-
ments across different device classes.

     Telematics Research Service

Perspectives
Traditional telematics services such as fleet management and automatic emergency calling first offered by Onstar more
than a decade ago were among the first applications of GPS technology. Recent evolutions promise to bring a wider
range of connected infotainment services into the car environment. However, the telematics industry is characterized
by a high degree of fragmentation, long design cycles, lack of personalization and upgrade capabilities, and high costs,
making it increasingly difficult to compete with portable consumer devices such as PNDs, MP3 players and handsets on
which software based telematics services are starting to appear.

The future of the telematics industry hinges on the ability of car manufacturers and telematics service providers to adopt
open source software approaches, telematics standards, new business models and a far reaching willingness to cooper-
ate across the whole value chain. This transformation process is at the heart of the Telematics Research Service cover-
age, offering in-depth understanding of the underlying dynamics.

Consumer telematics systems are gaining momentum due to
the growing awareness about the benefits of positioning and
communications technologies in cars for improved safety,
security, maintenance, convenience, infotainment, and cost
savings. Toyota plans the launch of telematics services in
the US and China in 2009, and Ford continues to extend its
SYNC service in the US, with introduction in Europe sched-
uled for 2010. Government regulation is an important driver
in Europe, Mexico and Brazil.

This study examines consumer telematics features, trends,
drivers and barriers, including a SWOT analysis for each
hardware form factor. It describes the telematics ecosystem
and value chain and provides strategic recommendations.
The study contains forecasts by region for shipments and
revenues of embedded and hybrid OEM, aftermarket, por-
table and converged systems and services.

     The Mobile Consumer Research Service

Perspectives
While consumers are the largest part of the mobile market and therefore provide the greatest opportunity, they are
also creating their share of challenges. This is becoming most apparent for operators with mobile data traffic. Western
European consumer usage of mobile broadband was the harbinger of the high traffic that consumers can generate with
connected laptops and netbooks. Now in the United States, video and web usage of AT&T’s 3G iPhone is creating simi-
lar challenges. ABI Research expects lots of activity in the mobile marketplace, to not only promote but also to manage
consumer mobile data services adoption and usage.

In emerging markets, operators are seeking ways to drive services revenue growth. Disposable incomes in emerging
markets are a fraction of those in wealthier industrialized nations, so mobile suppliers are forced to apply targeted in-
novation. Examples include using the Opera mobile browser to send compressed web pages over mobile networks for
mobile web browsing; sending text alerts to get cricket match updates; and offering IM services that allow subscriber
chat rooms to be decorated with emoticons purchased by the customer.

These topics and others are covered in The Mobile Consumer Research Service, which provides the most comprehen-
sive data and analysis of the mobile consumer serving both the traditional mobile suppliers and the new mobile market
participants: brands, media companies and advertising agencies.

     Wi-Fi Research Service

Perspectives
Wi-Fi has reached ubiquitous levels in devices such as laptops and netbooks, is quickly becoming ubiquitous is smart-
phones, and continues to become increasingly significant in portable and line-powered consumer electronics. Wi-Fi’s
importance in devices is doubling as location-aware applications make use of Wi-Fi as an alternative positioning technol-
ogy.

As the penetration of WWAN into a wider array of devices beyond the handset continues, Wi-Fi is not becoming re-
dundant. Rather, Wi-Fi is becoming critical, with an increasing number of carriers embracing it as a way to offload data
traffic to a wired network in order to maximize capacity on the WWAN network. The Wi-Fi Research Service includes
market share, market sizing, and forecasts for Wi-Fi chipsets and Wi-Fi networking equipment across both consumer
and enterprise spaces.

Perspectives
A number of wireless technologies and mission-critical applications have converged over the past few years to create a
vibrant wireless healthcare industry, one that is tracked closely by ABI Research’s Wireless Healthcare Research Ser-
vice. One example is a trend towards wireless patient monitoring. Physicians are able to use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices
to examine just how effectively a patient’s heart pacemaker is working. This information can be transmitted not only to a
physician’s handheld device, but also to computers on wheels (COWs) or computers on walls (COWs) for analysis.

It’s not only patients’ vital signs that are being monitored, however. Many hospitals as well as eldercare facilities are us-
ing RFID tags on patients to monitor their location within facilities. Some systems now are set up to send out alerts if an
Alzheimer patient tries to leave a protected environment.

Still another example of the convergence of wireless technologies and applications in a modern healthcare facility is the
exciting work taking place with quadriplegics. Researchers have successfully implanted chips that translate patients’
brain signals into Wi-Fi data that is transmitted to mechanical braces on arms and legs. These devices are “instructed”
to help move arms and legs. The result is patients who are able to walk and use their arms to enjoy a far more normal
and independent life.

The Wireless Healthcare Research Service also tracks the convergence of voice, data, and video applications that are
changing the ways hospitals handle patient information. The US Government’s focus on developing nationwide elec-
tronic medical record systems is opening up opportunities for wireless vendors to help transmit such information quickly
and securely.

Perspectives
The use of sensors and actuators to monitor and control machines, buildings (and other structures) and the physical
environment is growing rapidly as businesses, consumers, and governments seek greater operational efficiency, better
energy management capability, improved safety and security, and the ability to offer or enjoy new products and services.
The advent of standards-based, low-power, low-data rate wireless sensor networking (WSN) technologies has been a
key enabler of this burgeoning trend. However, the plethora of existing and developing WSN standards, the long value
chains, and the complex application development requirements associated with the WSN market all pose challenges
and uncertainties for vendors and customers seeking to utilize WSN technology.

The Wireless Sensor Networking Research Service addresses the complexity of the WSN market and analyzes the mar-
ket opportunity and key technology trends for utilizing low-power, low-data rate wireless technology to network sensors
and actuators. The Service tracks historical shipments and forecasts future shipments of IEEE 802.15.4 ICs (a core WSN
technology standard), segmented by region and major application segment, in a Market Database published semi-an-
nually. Also, a Vendor Matrix assesses the competitive positioning, strengths, and weaknesses of IEEE 802.15.4 IC
vendors. Published throughout the year, Research Briefs provide further qualitative assessment of topical market issues
while “deep dive” Research Reports delve into major WSN application areas, such as smart metering and home automa-
