IRONY is when what we say or write conveys the opposite of its literal meaning. It
can also be a difference between what is expected and what actually occurs.
Examples: Someone might say “Nice weather” when it’s hailing outside.
Here are some true happenings from the internet
   • A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen, shaking frantically
with what looked like a wire running from his waist toward the electric kettle.
Intending to jolt him from the deadly current, she whacked him with a wood
plank, breaking his arm in two places. Till that moment he had been happily
       listening to his walkman.
   • A terrorist didn’t pay enough postage on a letter bomb. It came back to him
with “return to sender” stamped on it. Forgetting it was the bomb, he opened
it and was blown to bits.

Materials: Copies of “Gift of the Magi” or “Ransom of Red Chief”

As a class read one of the selections.

Why was the story an example of irony?
