What Does the Bible Say About Serving Others?
Many people are curious about what the Bible has to say about service. God expects those who love
Him to provide service to others. By providing service to others, we become God's hands reaching
out to others. God has a special place in His heart for the most vulnerable members of society
and charges His followers with providing service to them.

A few moments with ... Betty Mae Willett
Where were you raised and where did you attend high school?
I was born in Nanjemoy although that area was called Maryland Point at the time. I was raised in
Nanjemoy and graduated from LaPlata High School. Harold and I continued to live in Nanjemoy after we
married, so I can say I’ve been here all of my life.
What age did you receive Christ?
I was 11, and it was the very last service of our annual two-week revival. I knew I had already given my
heart to Jesus, but I was shy about “going forward.” I was baptized in the river at Liverpool Point.
How long have you been serving the Church?
I was a substitute Sunday School teacher when I was 16 and later I taught “Beginners” in VBS when I was
17. At 19, I started teaching Junior girls (9 to 12 years old). I’ve also taught Youth for more than 20
years, and then taught Preschoolers until 2009. That is a total of 56 years.
I started playing the piano for BTU (Baptist Training Union) when I was about 12. I have been Church
Music Director since July 1971.
What do you see God doing in Nanjemoy Baptist Church?
I believe God will bless us if we put Him first in all that we do. God has given our pastor a vision…a vision
based on the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). I can see God having our building overflowing
with people as the people leave the building and connect with the community.
How do you hope to be a part of it? I want to do whatever I can to serve Jesus.
How did you meet Harold and how long have you been married?
Our school was small enough that we all knew each other. However, it was here in Church that we
became friends. We were always together for choir practice and choir functions. We had our first date
on November 28, 1953, and we were married June 16, 1956 … almost 55 years!!
Please share one of your favorite verses &/or hymns and how it speaks to you ...
One of my favorite verses is Philippians 4:6-7. I learned it from the KJV, but I especially like the wording
from the New Living Translation: “6/ Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell
God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7/ Then you will experience God’s peace, which
exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ
Jesus.” Other verses that are important to me now are 2 Corinthians 12:9a – “My grace is sufficient for
you.” And it is comforting to know that “The Lord is My Shepherd; I shall not want ….” in Psalm 23:1. I
have many favorite hymns. One is ‘How Great Thou Art’ especially the third verse:
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, Sent Him to die, I scare can take it in,
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin.
I also love the hymn ‘Because He Lives’. How wonderful to know that because He lives I can face
tomorrow. And another is ‘A Child of the King’. I have the assurance that I am a joint-heir with Christ and
a child of the King.
Hobbies? Yes, I love to read, cook and play the piano. But mostly, I like spending time with my family.
Favorite vacation spot?
No one word answer here either. I love the Outer Banks, but I also love the mountains in North Carolina
and Tennessee. We have wonderful memories of a vacation with friends on St. Simons Island, Georgia.
And our 50th anniversary trip to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island could definitely make those a
It is exciting to be a part of Nanjemoy Baptist Church. I pray that we will continue to grow and that all
that we do will glorify God.

What we’ve done … In January, a 2-week Spiritual Gifts workshop was held on Wednesday evenings for
kids in grades 6 & up …. we helped our youth discover what their special God-given spiritual gift is,
helped them understand the meaning of their gift and discussed ways they can use that gift to glorify God
and further His kingdom! Now that we have identified what the spiritual gift of each youth member is,
the youth leaders can help guide our youth in putting their gifts to work for God’s glory. We plan to
retake the survey next year to evaluate the past year and to discuss how we have progressed in using our
spiritual gift now that we are aware of what that gift is.
What we’re gonna do … The youth leaders have recently gotten together and have planned at least one
youth night activity per month through the end of June. Below you can find a schedule of the upcoming
fellowship and service events that are currently on the calendar ... with more to come!
