                                       October 2007 Newsletter
Dear members and friends

Welcome to our October newsletter in which we report on some of the events that took place over
the last few months.

Committee meetings
The Committee met on 21 October 2007. One of the important things that happened at the meeting
was the election of the Vice-President of the Association. Liz Micallef was elected at the meeting and
is looking forward to the challenges of the coming year and to work for our members. The Committee
agreed that in future, the Vice-President would be elected at the same time as the other office
bearers. There was discussion about the various events that could be held for members of the

We have decided to conduct a survey to find out what our members would like the Association to
organise. Please see the attached survey, complete and return it to the address at the bottom. If you
would prefer to talk to one of the Committee members about what you’d like to see, please contact
one of us.

SKORBA performance 9 November 2007
The Sydney based band SKORBA will be presenting a programme of music and images about the
Ancient Temples of Malta. They will be presenting their programme Hagar Qim: Temples of Devotion.
Songs will be in Maltese and there will be a screening of pictures of Maltese heritage. This music has
been receiving tremendous support from the Maltese Community in Sydney and Melbourne with
much interest expressed in the U.S.A. and Israel. An act of International quality and proudly Maltese.

SKORBA will appear at Southlands Sports Club, 5 Heard Street. Mawson on Friday 9 November at 7.30
pm. You can book tickets ($15 each) directly with the club on 62627265. You can also find more
information about the club and SKORBA at

Maltese Language School Conference
People from all of the Maltese Language Schools in Australia and one from New Zealand attended
the conference in Canberra to discuss the school curriculum and share ideas. Great discussions and
debate took place about where the schools would head towards from here. One thing that was
apparent in each of the State’s reports was their dedication and energy.

The Canberra and Queanbeyan report advised that the Maltese classes in Canberra are run by the
Maltese-Australian Association. At present there are only 11 students but the Association is hoping to
increase the numbers with lessons being offered to new students in 2008 and other students being
encouraged to return for lessons.

The Maltese language school
As advised in the report, lessons will continue in 2008. There will be classes for beginners and
continuing students. Canberra/Queanbeyan students may have the option to sit Maltese language
exams in the Higher School Certificate through the Victorian language school.

To help us plan for the lessons it is important that students enrol by 15 December 2007. Costs for four
weeks’ lessons are:
     $30 per student
 $25 per second student from same family
 $20 for subsequent students from same family.

Structured lessons will start from February 2008 and will be held at the Maltese High Commission in
O’Malley. Please contact one of the Committee members if you would like to enrol or if you have any
questions. The language school may not be able to continue if there are not enough students.

Pauline Adams, the local Maltese language teacher, presented a report to the Maltese-Australian
Association meeting on 21 October 2007. She spoke about some of the things that will make the
school a success in 2008.

The annual dinner dance was held on Saturday 8 September, with music by Solid Gold. About 80
people attended the dinner dance and all had a good time, as you can see from the attached

The Madonna Procession on Sunday 9 September was very well attended. Fr Claude Borg celebrated
mass and the JC Choir led the hymns during mass. They also provided some entertainment during the
afternoon tea.

Forthcoming events
We will again be celebrating Mass for our departed family and friends on 7 November at 6.30pm. If
you haven’t already done so, please advise Fred Flask of the names of your departed loved ones to
ensure they are included in the Mass.

We will also organise the Christmas BBQ which will take place on 2 December in the St Benedict’s
School Hall. The cost this year will be $10 per person. If you have a child under the age of 8 please let
us know so that Santa can provide a present. You will need to bring your own cutlery, crockery and
glasses. Please let one of the committee members know if you are attending by 18 November 2007.

We have applied to have a stall at the Food and Dance Spectacular on 8 February 2008. We will be
asking for volunteers to provide food and man the stall on the day. Again please advise one of the
Committee members if you will be making a dish and/or helping on the stall on the day. A final roster
detailing the food and times will be circulated to volunteers the week before the festival.

Other news
We have had interest from one of our younger members to start a youth group, but we haven’t had
anyone else express interest. If you, or someone you know, is interested in joining a youth group please
contact one of the Committee members.

In an effort to provide a more efficient service and to help cut costs, we now have the capacity to
deliver your newsletter by email. If you are interested in receiving your newsletter electronically,
please advise one of the Committee members, by phone or by email.
