Writing Tips on How to Write Stories

Most people need some writing tips and advice on how to write stories properly before they are
able to submit their own literary works for publication. There is more to writing a story than simply
having an idea, although many great writers would love to be able to come up with great ideas at
will!

The idea is just the start: then you must know how to write in a way that keeps your reader
interested, and remaining with you until the final page. After that come the problems involved in
getting your story or book printed and then published. One way is to start by writing short stories
for magazines, but even there you need the contacts and the right avenues to enable you to see
your work in print.

Speed Detracts from Quality

Putting pen to paper is now more of a colloquialism in these days of PCs and laptops, where most
communication is carried out on a keyboard. Perhaps the loss of the simple act of filling a pen or
even a nib with ink and then writing by hand has detracted from the ability to write with some
people.

One had the time to think while writing longhand, and it is perhaps doubtful if the great writers of
the past such as Shakespeare, Thackeray, Austin and Dickens would have achieved such
outstanding success had their fingers moved faster over a keyboard than their brains could keep
up. Rather than logical or imaginative thought, such speed would have created its own content
and our classical novels would have set somewhat of a lesser example of penmanship and literary
excellence than they do today.

Give Each Phrase a Meaning

This is the longhand way of saying that you should pause for thought when writing, and not let
your fingers dictate your mind. Think of what you are writing, and construct, not just the overall
theme of your story, but also each individual sentence with thought and imagination, and make
each phrase have a meaning to the tale.

Knowing how to write stories is more than simply picking up a pen or clattering on a keyboard, but,
as you will learn in our 10 writing tips, involves thought and planning. Every chapter should be
carefully plotted out to play its own part in the overall theme. You can often use paragraphs as
padding to keep the word count up, but you cannot do this with entire chapters.
