Jessie (character)

Jessie Thekekuttu Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya released in 2010, portrayed by

Trisha Krishnan. She was portrayed by Samantha Ruth

Prabhu in the film’s Telugu version Ye Maaya Chesave

(2010) and by Amy Jackson in the film’s upcoming Hindi

version Ek Deewana Tha (2012), while her voice was

dubbed by Chinmayi in all the three films.[1][2]

In the film

Jessie is from a conservative Malayali Syrian Christian

Nasrani Catholic family from Alleppey, Kerala, that lives

upstairs the rented house of Karthik[Note 1], a Hindu Vel-

lalar. Karthik falls in love with Jessie the moment he

meets her. Karthik expresses his love to Jessie, who is

afraid of speaking to men around her strict father

Joseph[Note 2], and ends up angering Jessie. The two meet

several times and Jessie begins to admit that she also

likes Karthik, but wants to refrain from any problems be-

cause she knows her father wouldn’t give her hand in

marriage to a Hindu. Consequently, due to various mis-

understandings between Jessie’s brother and Karthik, her

parents learn of their affair. They fix a match and sched-

ule her wedding. The day arrives and midway through

the ceremony, Jessie refuses to marry the groom, dis-

pleasing everyone in her family. Karthik and Jessie con-
