Summary and Analysis


Sample and Methodology

The Noel/Levitz College Employee Satisfaction Survey was administered over
the first two weeks of November 2007 in three forms: over the internet; in hard
copy to those with no access to a computer and hard copy in Spanish to those
whose Spanish language reading skills were stronger than English. Internet
responses went through SurveyMonkey directly to Noel/Levitz Inc. for tallying.
Hard copy forms were mailed to Noel/Levitz in bulk.

A total of 256 employees completed the survey in 2007, 212 full time and 42 part-
time. This compares to 260 completers in 2006. The proportions completing the
survey by length of time employed, by faculty, staff, administrator status, and by
full-time/part-time status were roughly comparable to the previous year. Slightly
more staff and administrators and slightly fewer faculty completed the survey in
2007 compared to 2006. Respondents represented approximately 71% of all full
time employees and 12% of part-time employees.

Executive Summary

1. Overall satisfaction increased in 2007 compared to 2006, and some key areas
where efforts had been directed showed marked improvement. Overall
satisfaction levels increased most for staff and faculty, with no statistical change
in overall satisfaction among administrators.

2. The highest levels of satisfaction among all three groups of employees
centered on:

    o SFCC being well respected in the community and its reputation continuing
      to improve;
    o Faculty, administrators and staff taking pride in their work;
    o The institution promoting excellent employee-student relationships
    o Supporting the mission/vision/and purpose of SFCC
    o Work being personally rewarding
    o Respondents exhibiting pride in working at SFCC

3. For faculty, the greatest increase in satisfaction over the previous year was
with the statement “The leadership of this institution has a clear sense of
purpose.” (Up 13.7% from a mean of 2.93 to 3.33 out of 5.0). For staff, it was
“The institution does a good job of meeting the needs of its staff.” (Up 14.4%
from a mean of 2.7 to 3.09 out of 5.0). For administrators it was “Efforts to

improve quality are paying off” and “The reputation of this institution continues to
improve.” (Both up 27.4% from a mean of 3.07 to 3.91 out of 5.0).

4. While improving employee morale remained something employees felt should
be an important priority of the College (with a mean of 4.5 out of 5.0) they no
longer thought it should be the College’s top goal as in 2006, and the percent
who would make it one of the College’s top three goals dropped from 21% to
15%. Retaining students to graduation at 18% and developing new academic
programs at 16% took somewhat higher positions and were most mentioned.

Opportunities for Improvement

1. While faculty responses showed improvement in mean levels of satisfaction
with some items, over 21 statement averages still fell below the 3.0 score that
indicated “Somewhat Satisfied.” This compared with only 8 such items among
staff and 6 such items among administrators.

2. All three groups agreed in their dissatisfaction relating to the following areas:
   o The lack of clear processes for orienting and training new employees;
   o The need for more or better written procedures that clearly define who is
        responsible for each operation and service;
   o The need to do a better job in meeting the needs of adjunct faculty;
   o The need for more effective lines of communication between departments;
   o Increased responsiveness to employee needs on the part of campus food
        service;
   o Levels of staffing needed by departments to do their job well.

3. Average levels of staff satisfaction with opportunities for advancement and off-
campus professional development declined along with a number of other job-
related issues when compared with last year, even as average faculty
satisfaction with these same areas increased.

Conclusions:

1. SFCC is very fortunate to have dedicated, committed employees at all levels
who take pride and satisfaction in their work, are proud of the College, believe it
is well respected in the community, and share its vision, mission and goals.

2. The College has made progress over the last year in increasing levels of
satisfaction in a number of key areas among all employees and among all types
of employees, notably related to mission and direction.

3. Nevertheless, there are significant areas where work remains to be done.
Improving communication, clarifying job responsibilities, systems, and processes;
meeting the needs of adjunct faculty; and improving food service responsiveness
are issues most in need of attention.
