Postings for Dec 5-11, 2011

This week we identify the articles from education, child and adolescent development, mental health and addictions.

Highlights

Here are some of the highlights we noted this week:

 Sexual Health Issues in the News

There were several reports on sexual health issues for young people this week, including HIV infections, pregnancy as the

primary reason for gilrls dropping out of school, and statistical evidence about the incidence of date rape. See below.

 Reports on Homophobic Bullying UNESCO meeting

The United Nations has focused on homophobic bullying as a violation of human rights in a report this week.

 Dating & Romance are part of adoelecent sexual health

Most often in sexual health research, the focus is on sexual behaviors such as condom use or intercourse and much less on

teen practices in dating and romance. Several articles in Issue #4, 2011 of Journal of Research on Adolescence help to fill

that gap.

 Special Issue on After School Programs

Several articles from Fall 2011 Issue of New Directions in Adolescent Development focus on after school programs, noting

how that after school activities are now considered as a prime learning opportunity and an essential part of the community

schools model and approach.

10

 Teacher Stress Understood

Two articles in Issue #7, 2011 of Educational Psychology examine how teacher stress can be mitigated in studies from the

UK and Hong Kong.

 Social Determinants Explained

Several articles in several journals reviewed this month help us to understand both the impact as well as ecology of poverty,

lower incomes and economic distress. These include articles in Issue #11 & 12, 2011 of Social Science & Medicine, the

European Journal of Public Health and the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine. See below.

Postings for Dec 12-18, 2011

This week we identify articles from journals focused on nutrition, physical activity, crime prevention/violence/safety/bullying,

accidental injury, infectious diseases, personal/social development, families/family life and sexual/reproductive health

Highlights

 American Large City School Districts Struggle with Disparities

The news this week included three reports from Chicago, New York and Boston an how they are struggling with disparities

and low achievement.

 Moral, Spritual and Social Development: Two more journals on our list

Two additions to the long list of journals that we review each month will provide more insights into the moral, spiritual and

28

social development of children and hot they affect their behaviour and development. Two articles in Issue #4, 2011 of

International Journal of Children’s Spirituality show the connections between spirituality, mindfulness and attachment.

Articles in Issue #4, 2011 of Social Development show the relationships between behaviour and friendship quality,

aggression and relationship styles.

 Implementation Issues and Wrap Around Services Model/Approach

Implementation issues related to the Wraparound School Services model or approach are well covered in several articles in

Issue #6, 2011 of Journal of Child and Family Studies. The issues include implementation supports for various intervention

components, a review of the implementation research and this comprehensive approach, trends in implementing the

approach in the USA, stages of implementation, fidelity and outcomes, assessing community and clinical supports, team

composition and integrating the wraparound approach with the similar Positive Behavior Support model.

 Impact of divorce on children

Several articles in Issue #5, 2011 of Family Relations describe the impact of divorce in different types of families, including

same sex and unmarried couples. In particular, the notion of a "good divorce" having little impact on the children of the

marriage is debunked. The divorce of parents has a strong impact on mental health yet is rarely discussed in the research

on school mental health programs.

 Social media and family life

The use of social media and technology in family life and communications is described in several articles in Issue #2, 2011 of

Family and Consumer Sciences Research Review.

Postings for Dec 26-Jan 1, 2012

This week we review the articles from journals focused on equity, place, human rights, diversity, low income countries and the

journals and newsletters published by various UN agencies.

Highlights

 Health Insurance and Student Absenteeism

It might be obvious but now we can safely note that providing health care insurance to families has the effect of improved

student attendance at school. A study in Issue #6, 2011 issue of Education and Urban Affairs does the analysis.

 Racial discrimination, education and health

Several articles in Issue #6, 2011 of Urban Education describe how schools, school staff and other unconsciously perpetuate

racial discrimination and suggest alternative approaches and practices.

 School Meals as a social construct

An article in Issue #4, 2011 of Critical Public Health demonstrates how a socio-ecological perspective was deployed during

an exploratory study into the role of primary school dining halls in improving children's nutrition-related behaviour. This

study revealed how policies at local and school levels reflected national objectives with respect to nutritional guidelines,

but were also influenced by multiple, competing interests at other socio-ecological levels. These included pupils’ food

preferences; organisational objectives such as protecting school meal uptake; and the practices of school meal staff. It is

argued that higher level policy interventions may have limited effectiveness if undermined by lack of attention to lower

level factors. The use of socio-ecological frameworks as theoretical, methodological and evaluative tools to support a

consistent, holistic approach during the design, implementation and evaluation of health improvement policies is

recommended.
