The journals reviewed this week include those focused directly on school health, safety, equity and social or sustainable

development as well as journals on health promotion & preventive medicine

Highlights

 Preparation of School Psychologists

Finally, a thorough discussion of professional training for working in or with schools that is not focused on teachers! Several

articles in Issue #9, 2011 of Psychology in the Schools examine how school psychologists should be trained.

 Another article on measles

An article in the October 2011 Issue of British Journal of School Nursing discusses nurse roles in detecting measles. This is

yet another sign that this disease may be making a comeback and that schools will be asked to address it.

 What makes school violence prevention programs effective?

Based on a meta-analysis, researchers suggest that skill acquisition, social-cognitive processes, and classroom

characteristics are largely responsible for success in elementary violence prevention programs.

 US State Screening Policies for BMI

A comprehensive picture of state requirements and recommendations for body mass index (BMI) and body composition

screening of children and explore the association between pediatric obesity prevalence and state screening policies.is

presented in Issue #5 of Preventing Chronic Disease.

 Use of Complexity Framework to Assess Programs

An article in the latest issue of Health Promotion Practice identifes the barriers and facilitators in adopting, implementing,

and maintaining a school-based physical activity intervention using RE-AIM as a theoretical evaluation framework. It was

concluded that interventions that consider complexity and compatibility with the school setting are more likely to be

adopted, implemented, and maintained.

 Costs of School Physical Activty and Nutrition Programs

A detailed cost analysis of a Nova Scotia healthy eating and physical activity program in a school board reported that on

average, to $7,830 per school and $22.67 per student. Of the public funding, $140,500 was for CSH, $86,250 for breakfast

programs, $28,750 for school food policy programs, and the remainder for other subsidized programs. Grants, donations

and fundraising were mostly locally acquired. They totaled $127,235, which translates, on average, to $2,892 per school or

$8.37 per student. The value of volunteer support was estimated to be equivalent to the value of grants, donations and

fundraising combined. Of all grants, donations, fundraising and volunteers, 20% was directed to physical activity programs

and 80% to nutrition programs.

 Less sleep correlated with several risk behaviours

An article in the Oct-Nov issue of Preventive Medicine reports that Insufficient sleep on an average school night was

reported by 68.9% of students. Insufficient sleep was associated with higher tobacco use, marijuana use, alcohol use,

suicide, sexual activity, sadness and hopelessness, fighting and more.

 School sales of sweetened beverages has no effect on weight

We find almost no evidence that availability of sweetened beverages for sale at school leads to heavier weight or greater

risk of overweight or obesity among children. We also find limited evidence that availability of sweetened beverages for

sale at school leads to higher total consumption of these beverages. This startling conclusion is based on a large US

longitudinal study of young children. Go to this article in the Nov/2011 issue of Social Science & Medicine.

 Global Mental Health

Several articles in the Oct 22, Oct 29 and Nov 5, 2011 issues of The Lancet discuss global actions and the burden of mental

health problems of children and adolescents.

Highlights

 Going Beyond RCT's to True Understanding

Several articles in Issue #6, 2011 of Research on Social Work Practice help us to understand the limitations to RCT's and

various alternative research methods. These include a better understanding of the interaction between the local context

and program outcomes, the influence of mediators and moderators in the implementation process, identifying and

predicting causal pathways and more.

29

 Historical View of Young Children as a risk to adults, not "at risk"

This article investigates interventions in the gutter play of British working class children in the first decade of the 20th

century through their re-location within Free Kindergartens. In contemporary literature, the street child was viewed

through a binary lens, as both ‘at risk’ and ‘as risk’, reflecting wider societal discourses in a period of rapidly developing

social policy. This was a primary reason for the introduction of public schooling and explains why schools must continue the

tradition of exercising social control on children.

 Green schools, student achievement and teacher satisfaction

A Toronto, Canada study comparing student performance, teacher satisfaction in retro-fitted schools vs regular schools

found that there were important but not statistically significant differences favouring green schools over regular schools
