Postings for Oct 17-23, 2011

The journals reviewed this week focus on physical activity, nutrition, crime prevention/bullying, accident prevention,

infectious diseases, personal/social development, family studies and sexual health.

Highlights

 Female adolscents and physical activity

Two articles from Issue #2, 2011 of Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health help us to understand

female adolescent perspectives on physical activity.

 National Reports on Safe Schools

Issue #5, 2011 of the International Journal of Behavioral Development includes several reviews of safe schools,

anti-bullying programs in several countries including Norway, Canada, Australia, Austria

 Fatness Causes Inactivity in Children, Not the Reverse

A startling conclusion is presented in an article in the October issue of Archives of Childhood Diseases. Fatness

leads to inactivity, but inactivity does not lead to fatness: a longitudinal study in 202 children (EarlyBird 45). The

authors suggest this reverse causality may explain why attempts to tackle childhood obesity by promoting PA have

24

been largely unsuccessful.

 Family Studies Education Revisited

An article Reconceptualizing the Domain and Boundaries of Family Life Education is a good start to a much needed

re-examination of family studies education around the world.

 Informal as well as formal sources of sex information

A Minnesota study suggests that formal sex education in schools should be combined with informal sources of

information. Students who had talked about sex with parents and siblings were less likely to have multiple partners

or have less safe sex

 Teen perceptions about sexual health in low income countries

Issue #4 of Sex Education has three articles examining the perceptions of young people living in low income

countries about sexual health

 Religious beliefs delay sex for youth

The protective influence of faith and religious beliefs is confirmed in a small study reported in Issue No 6 of Sex

Education Research. Religiosity offers protective effects for both coital and noncoital sexual behaviors. This effect

should also be examined more thoroughly in regard substance use and social responsibility.

The journals reviewed this week cover school social work, child protection, sustainable development, equity, human rights

and diversity, low income countries and the newsletters of various UN agencies.

Highlights

 Academic achievement despite child maltreatment: A longitudinal study

An article in Child Abuse & Neglect suggests that chronic maltreatment over time was the strongest factor in

reduced academic achievement and that behaviour problems by the child were actually correlated with better

scores.

 Abuse, Sexual Abuse and Adolescent Offenders Not Certain

Recent research indicates that adolescents who have sexually offended are more likely than other adolescents to

have a history of sexual and physical abuse. However, it is unclear whether abuse predicts re-offending among

these adolescents.Due to methodological shortcomings in this area, such as limitations in methods of determining

abuse history and the scarcity of research, the ability to make conclusions about the relationship between abuse

and adolescent sexual recidivism is limited.

 Youth Justice Systems Reviewed

Several articles in Issue #2, 2011 of Journal of Children’s Services examine systems of youth justice and questions

some of the changes being made in England and other countries.

 World Polio Day Marks Progress

Several news stories, reports and resources were ;published this week as part of World Polio Day. The theme

advanced in the campaign is that we are very close to eradicating this disease worldwide.
