Highlights and Observations on the News Stories, Research Articles & Resources Published this Month

Here are some of the highlights and observations we identified this month. These are taken from our weekly reports.

 Teacher Turnover and Health Education

One of the problems associated with sustaining health education programs is teacher turnover. Some studies

(there are few) indicate that health is often assigned to new entrants to the profession. So, it behoves us to

examine teacher turnover. There are articles about teacher turnover in three of the journals reviewed this week in

our SH Insider.

 American discussion of the future of school health promotion

The American School Health Association sponsored a webinar this week on the future of SH. The webinar

discussed important social, technological and economic trends that will affect the health of young people and

schools in the next several years.

 Canadian Provinces address mental health through schools

News stories this week include more references to Canadian provinces and territories developing plans to address

youth mental health. Alberta is revamping its MH services and two northern territories (Nunavut and NWT) are

responding to suicide rates among aboriginal youth.

 Hunger as well as obesity

As the United Nations World Assembly turns its attention to the growing burden of chronic diseases, a news story

out of the UK reminds us that hunger and malnourishment are still among us, even in high income countries.

 Community factors in adolescent eating habits

Community-based and social factors influencing weight, diet and food choices were covered in several articles in

the nutrition journals nutrition this month. These included parental concerns, seasonal variations in active

transportation, food company sponsorships, socio-economic status, fast-food outlets and more.

 Micro-nutrients in school feeding and food programs in low income countries

Several articles in Issue #3, 2011 of Food & Nutrition Bulletin reported on how supplying micro-nutrients in camps

and schools in low income and conflict-disrupted countries can have significant benefits

 WHO Meeting on Social Determinants in Brazil in October

The news this week includes the program and a paper prepared for the WHO meeting on social determinants

being held in Brazil.

 Cost benefit studies on safe schools and school mental health

A report issued by the Canadian Institute on Health Information contains several cost-benefit studies showing

remarkable savings school and parent education programs on bullying and mental health.

 Autism a focus in North America

Autism is emerging as a hot topic in Canada and the US, with the US President signing a law into effect and Canada

promoting awareness in a week of activities.

 Sports Leagues get healthier

The professional sports leagues in North America are responding to increased health and safety concerns as

professional baseball finally bans tobacco chewing while playing and the hockey league cracks down on fighting

during games as part of an initiative to curb head shots

Research Articles and Reviews

The citations shown were located in our scanning of over 150 peer reviewed journals and research review web sites. We

development and other similar forms of human development. We welcome suggestions for other journals that should be

monitored.
