					Cycling Matter in
  Ecosystems
       Organic Substances
• Always contain carbon, hydrogen and
  sometimes nitrogen and oxygen
• Ex. Proteins, sugars, fats
       Inorganic Substances
• Do not contain a combination of carbon
  and hydrogen
• Ex. CO2, H2O
          Nutrient Cycling
• All organisms are made up of the atoms
and molecules on the planet. There is no
other source of nutrients…  matter
must be recycled for new organisms to be
  ‘born’
   Photosynthesis and Respiration
            Compared
• Photosynthesis
• Carbon dioxide + water + light  glucose + oxygen
• 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + light  C6H12O6 + 6 O2
              Reactants Products
• Respiration
• Glucose + oxygen  water + carbon dioxide + energy
• C6H12O6 + 6 O2  6 H2O + 6 CO2 + energy

        Reactants Products
Make a chart listing the similarities and
differences between photosynthesis &
          cellular respiration
• Similarities • Differences
