LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
The Preface
"The Lord be with you," is the oldest set of text in the mass and is exchanged between the priest and the
congregation. We are then invited to turn to the Lord in prayer. The Preface is an introductory prayer,
which gives a specific reason for our thanksgiving.
The Sanctus
The Sanctus is the last part of the Preface in the Catholic Mass, sung in practically every rite by the people
(or choir), or if recited, it needs a firm and exalted tone. It is one of the oldest elements of the Catholic
Mass liturgy. Like the prophet Isaiah, we fall on our knees in awe, for we realize the presence of
something greater than ourselves.
Epiclesis
Epiclesis is an invocation of God to send the Holy Spirit to change the bread and wine into the Body and
Blood of Jesus Christ. Specifically and unambiguously God is called on to transform the offering of bread
and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
The Consecration
Here the elements are consecrated and transformed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. This is the
key moment of the Catholic Mass. During the consecration the priest takes the bread and then the wine
and repeats over them the words and action of our Lord during the Last Supper.
Memorial Acclamation
After the Chalice has been shown to the people the priest invites the people to proclaim the Mystery of
Faith.
Remembrance
After the memorial acclamation the priest invites us to "Call to mind" or remember the great events of
our salvation, death, Resurrection and Ascension of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Offering
In that memory we offer the sacrifice, calling on God to offer the sacrifice in union with all the sacrifices in
the past. In the offering, the miracle of transubstantiation is applied to our benefit when we receive the
Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
Intercessions
The priest intercedes with the Father. We pray for those who have departed and we pray "for us sinners."
Final Doxology
The priest lifts the Host and the Chalice proclaiming the doxology, the words of praise linking the Father,
Son and the Holy Spirit. This concludes the Eucharistic Prayer.

Today, we take up a Collection that helps fight poverty at its roots. For 40 years,
the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has provided funding for
groups that make lasting change and lift up the poor in the United States. The
Collection has helped secure funding for low-income day care centers, legal
advocacy to enforce fair wages, programs that emphasize education, and affordable
housing in low-income neighborhoods. Fight poverty in America. Defend
human dignity. Give to the CCHD Collection.

On Friday, October 14, 2011, the Diocese of Phoenix posted a Community Notification Statement on
its website, advising the public that it had received three new claims from persons who alleged that Fr.
Jack Spaulding engaged in sexual misconduct with them when they were minors. The claims, which
involve conduct which is alleged to have occurred over 25 years ago, will be sent on to Rome for
further canonical proceedings.
Father Spaulding ordained for the Diocese of Phoenix in 1971, and served as Associate Pastor at St.
Helen Parish in Glendale from October of 1979 to August of 1980. He is currently on administrative
leave. Further information regarding the claims and/or the Diocesan Review Board process can be found
at: http://www.diocesephoenix.org/community-notification-statements.php.
As always, Bishop Olmsted and the Diocese of Phoenix encourage anyone who has experienced sexual
misconduct or abuse by a member of the clergy or by any employee or volunteer of the Church to
make a report to local law enforcement and to contact the Diocesan Office of Child and Youth
Protection. Please keep all who were involved in these cases in your prayers for healing.

ST. HELEN'S CHRISTMAS PAGEANT
Saturday, December 17, 2011
Social Center
3:00PM
In past years the journey of the Holy Family has been brought to life at St. Helen’s at
our Christmas Eve Mass through our Christmas Pageant. To make this celebration
even more available to our children and allow more family participation, the
Christmas Pageant has been scheduled for Saturday, December 17th.
Las Posadas, another beautiful Christmas tradition is being introduced. The Pageant
will start at 3:00pm followed by a brief Las Posadas Walk with song, prayer,
refreshments and ending with a Piñata in the courtyard.
As always we invite the children of our parish to participate in the Christmas
Pageant. There will be a sign-up table in the Courtyard after the morning Masses on
November 20th for any children wanting to take part in this year’s Pageant. The
Pageant practice will be on Thursday, December 15th from 5:00pm - 7:00pm in the
Social Center.
Please contact Debbie Martinez @623-979-3012 for more information.
