LANCE CPL. GREGORY AALTO
TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. – A Marine Harrier squadron based in Yuma, Ariz., trained for
rapid ground refueling and rearming here, March 23-27 in preparation for the unit’s upcoming de-
ployment to Afghanistan.
Marine Attack Squadron 214, slated to deploy in the coming weeks, sent 22 Marines to Twenty-
nine Palms’ Strategic Expeditionary Landing Field, which simulated conditions at a combat zone
airfield. VMA-214 will deploy with Cherry Point units as part of Marine Air Group 40.
Much like a NASCAR pit stop, the Marines swiftly taxied the jets and pumped hundreds of gal-
lons of fuel and loaded various munitions to return the Harriers to the fight as fast as possible.
The training is a direct response to what the squadron may be asked to do in Afghanistan, said
Maj. Roger Hardy, VMA-214 executive officer.
The unit refueled using Marine Wing Support Squadron 374’s pumps at the landing field as well
as transferring it directly from one of Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352’s parked
After gas tanks were topped, VMA-214 plane captains directed the Harriers to the ordnance load-
ing area of the taxiway. Once there, ordnance Marines attached 500-pound bombs to the Harriers’
wings and sent pilots back to the skies.
All went smoothly during the training with the exception of some equipment failure.
“The training went great for our first time. We got to work out the minor kinks. That’s the reason
we do this training,” said Sgt. Maj. Derek Fry, VMA-214 sergeant major.

Thanksgiving is coming a little early for North
Beginning Saturday until May 9, sportsmen will
stalk Cherry Point’s gun and bow areas for spring
“Hunting is definitely a benefit, not only to those
participating but also to the air station itself,” said
Officer Lissa Grimes with the U.S. Conservation Law
Enforcement Office here. “What hunters harvest stops
a lot of disease and starvation. It keeps Cherry Point
“It’s also good to get your kids involved,” she added.
“It’s a lot of quality time to spend with them. It’s a skill
and it teaches responsibility.”
While Grimes said the air station has been accident-
free in past seasons, hunters should always exercise
caution in the woods.
“Turkey season is the most dangerous season because
hunters don’t have to wear blaze orange while they’re
out,” Grimes said.
By wearing orange when walking in and out of
hunting areas, positively identifying targets and not
aiming in on movements or noises, hunters can help
ensure a mishap-free season, she added.
To promote safety and prevent overcrowding of
Cherry Point’s hunting areas, the Environmental
Affairs Division’s Conservation Law Enforcement
Office is selecting participants through a lottery. The
first lottery took place April 4, and subsequent lotteries
will be held one half-hour after sunset April 18, 25 and
Adults, 16-years old and up, must possess a valid
North Carolina hunting license and big game harvest
tag as well as a Cherry Point hunting permit. Ages 12
through 15 must have a North Carolina state hunter
education card to hunt with a fully-licensed adult, while
anyone under 12 may go out with a fully-licensed adult
but may not carry or discharge a weapon.
Hunting hours are a half-hour before sunrise until
sunset. Hunters may scout any area on Mondays only.
Only shotguns and muzzle-loading shotguns with
lead shot sizes four, five and six may be used. Archery
hunting for turkey in gun designated areas is authorized.
Cherry Point’s daily limit is one bearded male turkey
per person, with a seasonal limit of two birds.
For more information regarding the 2009 turkey
season and hunting rules aboard the air station, visit
the Conservation Law Enforcement Office or call 466-

required to wear blaze orange during spring turkey season, it is recommended they
don the color when entering and exiting hunting areas.

be selected via lotteries, which take place April 18, 25 and May 2.
