Program Information
The program in health systems administration of the Graduate College of Union University is located on the campus of
Union College. The School of Management is accredited by the AACSB. The principal degree offered is the M.B.A.,
with specialized concentration in health systems administration. Located in the Capital District of New York State, the
program maintains close working relationships with a variety of private health care institutions in addition to public
sector agencies.
Curriculum Description
The Master of Business Administration in health systems administration is designed to produce technically competent
and responsibly innovative managers to fill positions in the private and public sectors of the health care system. The
curriculum, which consists of 20 courses, provides students with a solid background in accounting, finance, statistics,
operations, and behavioral science. A 400-hour internship in a health care organization is required of each student.
Admission Procedures and Requirements
Admission to all programs is based upon a thorough review of each applicant’s credentials. Applications are accepted
on a rolling basis. Applicants must submit three recommendations from faculty or academic advisers, essay, scores
from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), and all college transcripts. Foreign students should submit
scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Address inquiries to the admissions coordinator at the
program address.
Opportunities for Financing Education
Scholarships and fellowships are awarded to a significant percentage of the full-time students in recognition of
academic promise. These awards are made on the basis of merit; no financial statement is required. Financial aid is also
available to students. Students interested in receiving scholarships are encouraged to file by April 1. Upon acceptance
of the application, the student will be considered for a form of support.
Opportunities After Graduation
Recent graduates of the programs hold positions in hospitals, HMOs, consulting firms such as the
PricewaterhouseCoopers and William M. Mercer, the Healthcare Association of New York State, the New York State
Department of Health, General Electric Corporate Benefits Office, and in a host of service-related organizations.
Graduates also receive administrative fellowhips in institutions such as Cleveland Clinic and Mt. Sinai Medical Center
in New York City. The program assists students in finding suitable placements.
Faculty Information
The faculty is committed to teaching and to research in the areas of health management and policy. The academic
faculty, interdisciplinary in character, is drawn from the full-time members of the Graduate Management Institute and
the Program in Health Systems Administration. Faculty backgrounds include expertise in management, finance,
accounting, operations research, biostatistics, organization theory, organization behavior, public policy, health
economics, and bioethics.
