SAS took a big step towards meeting that need today with the acquisition of Vision Systems and Technology, Inc.
(VSTI), a professional services company that has been delivering analytic solutions to the U.S. IC for over a decade.

Summary: Insurance companies talk about new product development and speed to market, but true innovation is
rare in the insurance sector. However, telematics could be one technology that may revolutionize the industry.
Telematics refers to the use of wireless devices to transmit data in real time back to an organization. For insurance it
is often used in the context of automobiles, whereby event data recording devices collect and transmit data on the
vehicle location and usage, such as information on air bag deployments, how fast and distance traveled, and stolen
vehicle locations through the use of GPS technology. The data recorded in the vehicle can then be used to develop
more accurate pricing, improve granularity in risk management and reduce losses by better assessments of claims.

Washington’s concentration of statisticians is largely associated with the government and related agencies, says
Alan Karr, the director of the institute. The exact number of statisticians in the Triangle isn’t clear, but the majority
of the American Statistical Association’s 871 North Carolina members are in the Triangle, and there are others
who are not association members. The Triangle’s strengths in the field come from the large number of
businesses that employ statisticians as well as the universities that train them. Read more: Thanks to SAS, Quntiles,

11,000 employees and operates in 100 countries on projects that range from assessing risk for banks to catching tax
cheats for governments to planning routes for airlines. As Mr. Goodnight describes it, SAS "uses companies'
historical data to work out their futures." Mr. Goodnight is the majority owner of the privately owned SAS -- the
company reported revenue of $2.31 billion in 2009, of which 11% came from Asia. This year, he forecasts the
company to grow revenues 5% globally, and highlights Asia as the fastest-growing region -- he expects revenue in
the region to increase 30% from 2009. Though SAS is smaller than its rivals SAP AG, Oracle Corp. and International
Business Machines Corp., it has never endured a loss in its 34 years of operation. Mr. Goodnight talked to Jason

Summary: I was reading this article in the Wall Street Journal on SAS software and CEO Jim Goodnight said,
“We’re producing so many new products. [They're all] in the funnel and we’ve got to get them in
production and it’s taking us longer to get them out the door…. A lot of the problems are testing issues. It’s
taking too long to solve all the problems. Every piece of software has its bugs. And with more and more products,
we’re struggling with compatibility to make sure the next release is easy to migrate to for certain customers. With
the sheer number of software solutions we have, it’s making it harder and harder to develop and test them
all.― Which got me to wondering why SAS does not take advantage of its considerable user base. In another
article from CBR Business Intelligence, it’s claimed that SAS has 45,000 customer sites. (Not that I’m
stalking y’all or anything). I have no idea what the average number of users is at each site but let’s try a
really low estimate of around 22. I say really low because I know that many of those sites are universities and
corporations that have hundreds of users and it would take a heck of a lot of small shops to bring it down to 22, but
let’s go with that. So, this gives them around a million users.

Tone: Positive
Summary: The great thing about SAS is that it’s so powerful and has such a broad offering. You’re able to
have all these tools at your fingertips to develop distinct models for each part of the process. So, even just trying to
capture the spread of a message, you may use one tool to deal with multiple social media and interactive touch
points and then another for removing correlations between those touch points and looking at causes. Then, you can
use a different area of SAS to develop models for ROI and another for forecasting models, yet it’s all self-
contained. Once you build your data sets, you can slice it in so many different ways without having to switch from one
software package to another. The other great thing is all the SAS user blogs and the wide reach of SAS, not only
through SAS user groups, but the ability to sit in presentations from different industries and learn from what
they’re doing. Sometimes I hear how the Census Bureaus or medical research companies are using SAS, and
that outside perspective just fits perfectly for how we’re looking at customer life cycles in a different way.

biggest priority these days is his concern that America isn't turning out enough new scientists and mathematicians to
prevent the flow of jobs and critical research to Asia and elsewhere. "Twenty-first century employers are looking for
workers who are proficient in science, technology, engineering and math, but in American schools these are not
areas of great interest," Goodnight said during a lecture sponsored by a longtime SAS-partner, the Wharton
Research Data Services. His talk was titled, "The Age of Analytics: Competing in the 21st Century."

Summary: This has been brought about by a number of significant occurrences. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 allowed
the South to move into the mainstream of national economic and social/cultural activity. Progressive leadership in
North Carolina, like Terry Sanford and Jim Hunt, acted as visionary facilitators in moving North Carolina in new
directions. They foresaw the need for a strong community college system, for better public schools, for a research
triangle park, for an effective partnership between public and private sector leaders. They recruited new progressive
business leaders to help shape the state's future, leaders like Hugh McColl at NationsBank, James Goodnight at SAS
Institute, Bob Ingram at Glaxo, John Medlin at Wachovia, and Jim Goodman at Capital Broadcasting to help move the
state forward. Together, they charted a course for the state that resulted in a new, vibrant, 21st century North
Carolina.

strongly focused on solution-selling and value-based. SAS is also trying to get customers to focus on incremental

while also educating the c-suite on the meaning and value of analytics.
