The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce
has extended the application deadline for
entries in the 20th annual Nevada City
Mardi Gras Parade.
There are no entry fees for individuals,
youth groups and local organizations. There is a $25 fee for commercial and political entries.

CITY - David Painter, representing the Painter family and SPD Markets, has been named grand
marshal of the 2012 Nevada City Mardi Gras Parade.
This year's 20th Annual Nevada City Mardi Gras Celebration is exected to draw a large and fun-
loving crowd to Nevada City on President's Day Weekend.
The Grand Marshal will preside at the Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball on Saturday night, Feb. 18, at
Miners Foundry, and will be a featured guest in the Mardi Gras Parade through the downtown
historic district at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19.
“I'm flattered; it should be fun,” Painter said of his selection. “This is all very new to me. I”ve never
had an honor quite like this before.” Painter will be accompanied in the parade by his wife, Sharon.
“Our Mardi Gras Committee wanted to recognize Dave and SPD for all they do for the community,”
said Cathy Whittlesey, executive manager of the sponsoring Nevada City Chamber of Commerce.
“They have always been very supportive of the city's events and activities.”
Painter has been active with the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce for many years, serving as
president of its Board of Directors in 2011.
SPD has been part of the community since the early 1950s when co-founder Lawrence Painter
opened a small grocery store on Broad Street. In 1959, Painter teamed with Western Auto dealer
