Secret Course Offerings, I
Department's project / special-topics courses

CS4983 (Tech Report II): not on the spring/summer schedule, but...
CS4993 (Honours Project)
CS4998 (Dir. Studies in Applied CS): probably for non-CS students
CS4999 (Dir. Studies in CS): 3rd and 4th year students

DA4993 (Data Analysis Project): can lead to a prize...
Use them to explore hot new areas, add latest

Secret Course Offerings, II
Reading Course: A professor schedules an
hour or two per week with you, typically
abbreviated or no lectures. Put on an existing
course that is not otherwise offered that term.
To be used in emergencies only; requires
finding a faculty willing to sacrifice time. Quality
of instruction is poorer.
Strict Department and Faculty policies enforce
”emergencies only”. Approval paperwork...
Secret Course Offerings, III
Take online courses from Canadian Virtual
University, or Acadia Online, or...
Requires pre-approval. Normally for courses
we don't offer here in the term you must have
them.
Usually not taken during the fall/winter, since
they are not covered by your full-time UNB
tuition.
Specializations / Minors
We have 2 active specializations: Software
Engineering and Networking. Plus Honours.
You must apply to join specialization (usually at
end of 2nd year). GPA not much below 2.5.
Why? So we can offer the courses you need
How? Forms on our website.
(Secret) BScCS and BISc students can add any
UNBSJ minor, unless those that are explicitly
forbidden.
Business, Criminal Justice, Math, Psych, ...
DIY (Unofficial) Minors
You've got lots of elective options, use them...
eg, DIY environmental bioinformatics
(with permission) take Biology as your Science
Take Biol 2245 (Cell Biology) , Biol 2015 (Genetics)
Take Biol 4245 (Molecular Ecology & Envir. Sci.)
from our Canada Research Chair...they generate
huge data sets and need CS expertise.
Organizations for CS
Professional organizations provide
a community for people in computing
places to publish or find specialized information
certification of CS degree programmes
job fairs / boards / mentoring / training / certification
codes of ethics
PR to advance computing in the public view
IEEE Computer Society, ACM [International]
Canadian Information Processing Soc. (CIPS)
Organizations for CS students
Student memberships in IEEE Computer, ACM or
CIPS. Reduced rates...consider it.
The UNBSJ CS Society
some years it has been more active than others
LAN parties, pub crawls, tee shirts
could do mentoring, bringing in employers, sponsoring technical
talks on topics that students would like, or bringing student views
to the Department....etc.
Let's get it active this year
Secret Curriculum?
BScCS being revised to match BCS in first two
years.
The University Calendar will not be updated
until the lengthy approval process finishes.
...but our course offerings this year are BCS-ish
including INFO1103 this term, instead of
CS2513 or CS3513.
2nd year and up may want to seek advising if a
required course does not appear available.
