“Vana Narva” (“Old Narva”) Christmas Fair
that takes place nearby Fama shopping
centre is the largest Christmas Fair in Ida-
Virumaa. It revives Narva urban fairs’ tra-
dition that was lost about 100 years ago.
Such folk craftwork as clothes of wool or
linen, ceramics, souvenirs, glass, porcelain,
metal, honey, meat and fish delicacies,
toys, scented candles and soap, products
from wood and cotton, jewellery and ex-
clusive ornaments could be found on the
shelves of the wooden houses of the Fair.
You can warm up by having some mead or
hot wine, and also treat yourself to some
of the traditional Christmas meals and
sweets, typical for both Catholic and Or-
thodox Christmas. During the Fair there
is a celebration of Christmas Toll as well
as fundraising for the construction of the
miniature Old Narva.
The Fair runs until the 15th of January.
Vana Narva awaits you!

Candlemas Day (Küünlapäev) is celebrated
on the 2nd of February, according to the Es-
tonian folk calendar. In Estonia this day sig-
nifies the end of midwinter and it is the first
largest women’s holiday of the year. Tradi-
tionally, during this day men were involved
in housework, while women were actively
celebrating: visiting friends and gathering
at the local tavern where they would drink
red wine or juice in order to stay healthy and
comely throughout the whole summer.
It was believed that the candles produced
on that day would burn particularly brightly.
In America and Australia, the 2nd of February
is Groundhog Day. It is the day when spring
weather predictions are made.
Narva Central Library invites you to take part
in Küünlapäev celebration. Candles, shad-
ows, books, music.., well, you would agree
that all these things stir up quite a familiar
array of associations.
The programme of the event includes exhi-
bitions of candlesticks, paintings, books and
magazines that promote the idea of Can-
dlemas, a shadow portrait-drawing master And one last thing: if you come to Narva on
class, reading books to children in the can- Küünlapäev, you must have something red
dlelight, a music concert, and so forth. to wear – to symbolise the colour of fire.

usually in late February and sometimes in ear-

this day to ride down snowy hills. The longer

on a modern quadracycle in Narva Castle.
Among the peculiar features of Vastlapäev

The most colourful event in June in Narva
is City Days. Traditionally this event falls on
the first weekend of the month.
The program of the city’s main event is
made in such a way that the residents and
guests can take an active part in it, rather
than just look on. The list of activities in-
cludes sports competitions, contests, con-
certs, exhibitions, artisan fairs, a solemn
procession through the streets of the city,
theatrical performances, “KVN” (humor-
ous stand-up performances), a festival of
national cultural societies, a community
walking tour, interactive programs, etc. In
recent years, almost all Estonian artists and
some Russian rock bands have performed
in Narva during the City Days.

In July, Narva attracts bikers from all over
the world: United States, Russia, Spain Swe-
den, Finland, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and,
naturally, Estonia together with some other
countries. The International Bikers’ Festival
“Narva Bike” is held on the territory of the
old Narva castle. The motto of the festival:
“Narva Bike – only the good”.
By their nature and ideology bikers are nice
people. And if someone is shocked by their
appearance, he/she should not worry about
it, as this is a just a manifestation of origi-
nality, and certainly not a manifestation of
aggressiveness. “Aggression is as far away
from them as their own motorbikes from
vehicles”, claim the Festival organizers.

In November, the world Figure Skating Cham-
pionship will take place in Narva. Young figure
skaters will compete in Narva ice hall, which
experts consider to be the best ice skating
arena in Estonia. The history of figure skat-
ing in Narva began in the late 1960’s. In the
late 1980’s, in “Kreenholm “open-air ice sta-
dium New Years performances were initiated.
Originally, these performances were intended
solely for figure skaters, their parents and rela-
tives. But since New Year’s performances had
attracted many residents, the event became a
traditional local event.
In 1995, “Pääsuke” Narva Figure Skating Club
was established. Shortly after the club be-
came a member of the Estonian Union of Fig-
ure Skaters. Since 1996, figure skating depart-
ment has been working under the auspices of
”Paemurru” sports school. Consequently, the
training staff is now employed by the figure
skating department in “Paemurru” and figure

In November, events that are three centuries
old will come to life again. Military-historical
clubs members from different countries will
reconstruct the historical events of the first
great battle of the Northern War (1700-1721).
They will demonstrate the battle that took
place at Narva between the Russian and
Swedish armies on 19-20 November 1700.
The Russians suffered a defeat in 1700. The
lives of 6,000 soldiers were lost, while Sweden
suffered a loss of 2,000 soldiers. But the great-
est impact of Narva Battle was a complete
loss of artillery (145 units were destroyed). “The Narva Confusion”: “…but when we re-

On 17-18 of December, Northern Yard of
Narva Castle opens its gates to a traditional
                      winter fair.
Local salesmen, as well as traders from
Tallinn swarm to take part in it. Just like in
any other fair, the shelves are filled with
goods: from Christmas toys and handmade
candles, to jams and pickles and freshly
smoked fish from Peipsi Lake. Typical for
these types of fairs, it is possible to down
a shot and have a bite to eat. Spit roasted
chicken and pork legs prepared over the
bonfire, salmon cooked on wooden boards,
and the old pharmacist offering you a glass
of red wine – just what the doctor ordered!
Here, in the Castle courtyard you can enjoy
food, drinks and sweets cooked by the old
                      recipe books.
Also, organisation of an international fes-
tival NARVA VORSTFEST during the fair is
                      planned.
Winter Fair in Narva Castle is a prelude to
                      Christmas holidays.
By the way, have you prepared your Christ-
mas gifts yet? You haven’t? Well, you might
do it at the Winter Fair in Narva.
