Playground Survey of Students at SAS Middle School November 16,
2006

1. What safety features do you think are important in a playground? (check one or more)

Equipment 13 +20 = 63%

Surface 15 + 24 = 75%

Paint used 3 + 2 = 10%

Spacing of equipment 8 + 18 = 50%

Supervision 1 + 18 = 37%

Procedures 3 + 4 = 13%

Other (please specify) A grass field

2. When you’re on the playground(s), do you like to be having fun, learning, or both?

Fun 14 + 26 = 77%

Learning 0+0=0

Both 3 + 8 = 21%

Neither 0

Other Recess is our break from school. We shouldn't have to learn during our break.
Then it would just be a class.

3. Do you think a playground area (sport court; the size of a tennis court) is suitable for
SAS? A sport court is an outdoor surface that can be used for basketball, soccer,
volleyball, in-line skating, tennis, and other games.

Yes 16 + 31 = 90%

No 1 + 4 = 10%

If so, why?
it sounds cool
because it's cool
because some people don't like playing sports
I think it also should be big enough for football
because we want to play more games than just basketball.
because it will be fun
better bigger court
because if you play football on a blacktop, you can get scraped and bruised. I speak from
experience.
because everyone plays different games
because it would be cool!
because then there will be a good way to play different sports. It will be cool!
people have different tastes and we need to recognize that.
because a lot of people like different sports.
it would be really fun! But where would we put it, over the blacktop?

4. Do you have some ideas for redesigning a playground? If so, what are they?
I would put a football goal and a soccer goal
We need more equipment
Repave, grass on outer border of court built in removable tennis vollyball net new
have a real see-saw
Get rid of the blacktop and plant grass or something soft.
there should be soft ground underneath the swings so if you fall you won't get hurt.

5. Which of the following equipment is important to you on the playground(s)? Please
check one per each item. IN PERCENT IN TABLE
