Job Description



Reports to: Disability Resource Center Director, Sharon Downs

Department: Disability Resource Center

Division: Educational and Student Services

Classification: Non-classified (Exempt from Fair Labor Standards Act)







Duties and responsibilities



1. Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and community members to create

usable, equitable, inclusive and sustainable learning environments.



 Establish collaborative relationships by serving on campus committees as

appropriate

 Participate in innovative projects and 5-year plan activities

 Provides captioning upon request for videotapes and digital media



2. Promote and facilitate awareness and access through training, advocacy and

accommodations.



 Provide training and technical assistance to faculty, staff, administrators,

and students

 Participate in ‘Retention Through Engagement’ program for students who

are Deaf or hard of hearing

 Maintain student files and records by documenting communications with

students, recording recommended course of action or accommodations,

and collecting documentation provided by the student

 Conduct workshops and conference presentations

 Provide telephone and face-to-face technical assistance

 Consult with director and staff of the writing lab on the differences

between ASL and English (susan, this was on the list that we wanted to

add, but it doesn’t seem to fit as well as I’d thought. What do you think?)

 Produce alternate formats from regular print (e.g., digital, Braille, large

print, and recorded)

 Provide lab assistance to students as needed



3. Interpret and transcribe classes and other university programs, including

online classes



4. Assist in finding and scheduling interpreters and transcribers

5. Contribute to interpreter and transcriber policy revision



6. Coordinate the captioning of videotapes used in the classroom



 Contacting publishers to get copyright permission and transcripts

 Transcribing and captioning videos

 Training others, including student workers, to assist in this process

 Determining campus needs and bringing in videos that need to be

captioned





Minimum Qualifications



1. High school diploma or GED plus one year of college credit



2. QAST certification (or equivalent) and interpreting skill level commensurate

with postsecondary education setting



3. Education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of

the following areas



 Knowledge of the RID Code of Professional Conduct

 Organizational skills

 Communication skills, including public speaking

 Writing skills

 Computer skills, including spreadsheet and word processing



Additional desirable qualifications



1. Bachelor’s degree in interpreting or related field



2. Education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of

the following areas



 National certification in interpreting (RID or NAD)

 Knowledge of the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
