Oregon 4-H Newsletter ~ September 2009
HORSE
Judges Training
Please remember that we would like at least one horse leader from every county to attend the
PNW Horse Judges Training in October. There is a leader/superintendent track being included
this time, and we feel it would be extremely beneficial for people to attend. Registrations are due
September 1, and all forms and information are on the PNW website:
http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/horse-judges-trainings
I hope that county leader associations are willing to help with the expense to get a
representative from their county there. It seems like there have been a lot of issues at Horse
County Fairs this year, and attending this training may help resolve some conflicts.

STATE FAIR
State Fair Thank You
Events at 4-H State Fair 2009 are now another piece of the 4-H year puzzle. To anyone who
has experienced the rush of having 250 judges and volunteers, teens, 4-H agents and program
assistants working 8-9 hours together in the Exhibit Building – it is really like a 4-H reunion.
Judges who evaluated the 4-H static exhibits said the exhibits were high quality and showed lots
of creativity. The results of this big day will be back at the county Extension offices soon. The
lunch served by Vicki Avery and Nellie Oehler was superb!
A HUGE “thank you” goes out to all the volunteers who make the 4-H State Fair possible. It
started with a group of 8 very organized and hard working Marion County teens who
volunteered to clean all the display cabinets for the Foods area of the Exhibit Building the Friday
before all the exhibits arrived. They cut 200 pieces of heavy paper to cover all the tables for
receiving and judging exhibits.
More volunteers assisted with exhibit receiving and judging than ever before. They kept the
work with the exhibits running smoothly and efficiently so that every exhibit was judged, and
received a score sheet and ribbon. Teen Staff coordinated the contests including the Iron Chef
Competition. Teams of teens and adults will help take down exhibits on Labor Day evening. This
is a great example of 4-H teamwork and THANKS to everyone who assisted throughout the
fair!!

VOLUNTEER
Volunteer Recognition
One way to recognize outstanding leaders from your county is to select a “Leader of the Year”
to honor at your Awards Recognition Celebration this fall. If it is too difficult to select ”just one
leader” from so many who have volunteered, you can select outstanding leaders in the different
project areas. The county Leader of the Year will then be your nomination for State Leader of
the Year. The selection of a State Leader of the Year is one of the special tasks/honors of the
Oregon Leaders’ Association Executive Council. At their May meeting they decided to move the
nomination deadline to January 1, 2010 for the selection of Oregon 4-H Leader of the Year
2009-2010.
The deadline was moved to later this year with the hopes that more time will allow for more
counties to submit names for the state Leader of the Year. All nominees are
acknowledged/introduced at the Spring Leaders’ Forum. Each nominee, as well as the person
chosen to be the Oregon 4-H Leader of the Year, will receive a framed certificate to
acknowledge their contribution to the Oregon 4-H Youth Development Program. The Oregon
Leaders’ Association sponsors registration for each county Leader of the Year to attend the
Oregon Leaders’ Forum. They also provide a scholarship to help the Oregon Leader of the Year
to attend Western Regional 4-H Leaders’ Forum. These are ways the county fees paid to the
Oregon Leaders’ Association give back to the county groups.
The form for nomination of State Leader of the Year is on the State 4-H website at:
