AUSTIN MOBILITY ROUNDTABLE 2004 is an opportunity for you to benefit from
discussions with researchers and business leaders on the latest innovations in mobile
technologies and analysis of their business applications. The third in a series of global
conferences on mobile communications and computing, the Mobility Roundtable is
organized by an international group of researchers and practitioners (see committee list
and information on past Roundtables below). In Austin, the conference will address the
challenges and opportunities facing the U.S. mobile and wireless industry.
Objectives of Austin Mobility Roundtable 2004
• Build and support a sustainable international
network of research and industry best practices for
the mobile communication and computing business,
market, and industry.
• Exchange research and knowledge about best
practices for different mobile modes of business.
• Facilitate communication and collaboration among
global researchers, practitioners, and policy makers.
This conference will bring together researchers from various disciplines
examining new technologies from a variety of theoretical perspectives. We invite
original scholarly works dealing with mobile computing, mobile commerce, and wireless
technologies. We invite research based on diverse theoretical perspectives, including
organizational behavior and organization theory, computer science, engineering,
strategic management, sociology, psychology, economics, political science, and

philosophy. We also encourage and welcome contributions from a wide range of
methodological approaches.
Of particular interest are papers that use existing, as well as new, theories and industry
practices to:
- explore the characteristics and challenges of the mobile communication and
wireless computing markets,
- present forthcoming innovations and future directions of mobile industry and
their impact on individuals, groups, organizations, and society at large,
- examine the impact of technological standards and policy on development,
- evaluate the changing rules of competition and the impact of various mobile
modes of business on organizational management and strategy.
The Roundtable precedes a call for papers for the Journal of Strategic Information
Systems (JSIS) on a related topic (see below). Initial versions of papers that address
strategic issues of mobile computing and commerce can be submitted to this
Roundtable for presentation, feedback and refinement, providing an opportunity to
receive initial feedback on submissions to this special issue of the JSIS (the deadline for
the journal’s special issue is July 1, 2004.)

The Future is UNWIRED:
Organizational and Strategic Perspectives
Special issue editors:

Bertil Thorngren (Stockholm School of Economics)
Sirkka Jarvenpaa (University of Texas at Austin)
Rapidly advancing mobile communications and computing technologies are not only creating new
ways of communicating, working, and relating, but also igniting an explosion of growth in products,
services, and businesses. Wireless technology is revolutionizing how we live, conduct business,
work, and interact.
The purpose of this special issue is to stimulate theoretical and empirical research on the mobile and
wireless technologies that enable the transformation of individuals, groups, organizations, markets,
economies, and societies.
- What are the strategic implications of mobile and wireless technologies?
- Are mobile technologies creating fundamental shifts in the definitions, types, and nature of
strategic orientations of groups, organizations, markets, and economics?
- How will mobile and wireless technologies affect strategic capabilities of groups, firms,
countries, and so forth?
We particularly encourage papers that take a strategic perspective, where ‘strategic’ can address
organizational, technology, business, or policy imperatives in mobile and wireless computing.
We welcome research contributions from both academics and practitioners on mobile computing
and mobile commerce. In addition to empirical papers, review articles that evaluate existing insights
and point to fruitful avenues for future research on strategic perspectives of mobile computing and
commerce are also encouraged. Authors are encouraged to contact the special issues editors to
discuss the suitability of their proposed papers. Those interested in submitting might also note that a
workshop on a similar theme will be held at the University of Texas at Austin on March 11-12, 2004
(see www.mccombs.utexas.edu/events/roundtable). Initial versions of papers can be submitted to
this workshop for feedback and refinement. Please note that the JSIS call for papers is open and not
limited to those papers that have been or will be presented in prior mobile conferences.
Papers must follow the authors' guidelines for the Journal of Strategic Information Systems (please
consult www.elsevier.com/locate/jsis for more information). The journal publishes high quality,
reflective, and analytical articles on issues concerned with the strategic applications of information
and communication technologies. Review articles and case study articles are also welcome. Case
study articles are expected to be more practice oriented and shorter (7,000 words). Both would be welcome for this special issue.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: July 1, 2004
PROCESS OF SUBMISSION: An electronic version of the submission should be sent to
Sirkka.Jarvenpaa@mccombs.utexas.edu with a “cc” marked to btl@mccombs.utexas.edu. Each
submission will be double blind refereed by three referees and one of the special issue guest
associate editors. While submitting, please indicate whether the article is a research paper or a case
study paper. Authors of papers that make it through the first round of refereeing will be asked to
revise and resubmit their papers in line with the guidelines provided by the editors within three to
four months. If a second revision is necessary, it is due within two months of the receipt of the
second round of reviews. It is estimated that the papers accepted for publication will appear in
either the June 2005 or the September 2005 issue of JSIS.
